Types Of Chemical Reactions

In contrast, a decomposition reaction happens when a single compound breaks down into simpler compounds. For instance, calcium carbonate decomposes to calcium oxide and carbon dioxide by the following equation: Calcium Carbonate → Calcium Oxide + Carbon Dioxide. Finally, a displacement reaction, also known as a double displacement reaction, takes place when two elements switch places in the formula of the original compounds. A well-known example of this kind of reaction is the replacement of mercury from cinnabar by sulfur to form liquid mercuric sulfide as shown below: Mercury Sulfide + Copper Sulfide → Liquid Mercuric Sulfide + Solid Copper.
Balanced Chemical Equations
Balanced chemical equations illustrate how atoms are conserved during a chemical reaction. They show all the atoms involved in a physical change so that they balance out before and after the reaction. To do this, you need to know if there are any atoms present in excess, which can usually be identified by looking at the number next to the letter symbolizing the atom in question. Once you have found them, put an equal sign between the numbers in front of the letters representing those atoms. After doing this for every atom involved in the reaction, make sure that both sides of the equation match exactly. If both sides are identical, your balanced chemical equation is correct.
