Class 10th Science: Chemical Reactions and Equations
In Class 10 Science, learning about chemical reactions and equations is a fundamental part of understanding the world around us. Chemical reactions are processes that lead to the formation of new substances or the transformation of existing substances. The study of these reactions, along with their corresponding equations, helps us understand the principles that govern the behavior of matter.
Chemical Reactions
Chemical reactions are classified into two main types: synthesis (formation of new substances) and decomposition (breaking down of substances into simpler forms). These reactions can be further categorized as combination, decomposition, single displacement (replacement), and double displacement (metathesis) reactions.
Equations
Chemical equations represent reactions mathematically, illustrating the conservation of mass and balanced participation of reactants and products. Balanced equations have the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation.
Balanced equations follow the following rules:
- The same number of atoms of each element appears on both sides of the equation.
- The coefficients (numbers in front of the formulas) are used to balance the number of atoms.
- For gases, the sides of the equation are separated by an arrow (→).
- For solids and liquids, no arrow is needed.
Common Types of Chemical Reactions
Combination Reactions
In combination reactions, two or more simple substances combine to form a single product. The reaction between iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) to form iron sulfide (FeS) is an example of a combination reaction.
Fe (s) + S (s) → FeS (s)
Decomposition Reactions
In decomposition reactions, a single substance decomposes to form two or more simpler substances. The decomposition of water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) gases is an example of a decomposition reaction.
2 H2O (l) → 2 H2 (g) + O2 (g)
Single Displacement Reactions
In single displacement reactions, one atom of an element replaces another atom of a different element in a compound, resulting in the formation of two new compounds. The reaction between zinc (Zn) and copper sulfate (CuSO4) to form zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) and copper (Cu) is an example of a single displacement reaction.
Zn (s) + CuSO4 (aq) → ZnSO4 (aq) + Cu (s)
Double Displacement Reactions
In double displacement reactions, two ions in solution exchange places, forming two new compounds. The precipitation of solid silver chloride (AgCl) when silver nitrate (AgNO3) and sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolve in water is an example of a double displacement reaction.
AgNO3 (aq) + NaCl (aq) → AgCl (s) + NaNO3 (aq)
