Mesoamerica Overview

Mesoamerica is a region in Central America, encompassing modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador.
It's characterized by a shared cultural heritage, including agriculture, writing systems, and religious beliefs, which predate the arrival of Europeans.
Significant pre-Columbian civilizations, like the Maya and Aztec, flourished in this region.
The region experienced significant environmental diversity, influencing the development of different cultures and societies.

Maya Civilization

The Maya civilization emerged in the region around 2000 BCE and flourished between 250-900 CE (Classic Period).
Notable for their advancements in astronomy, mathematics, and calendar systems.
Developed complex hieroglyphic writing, which allowed them to record historical events, astronomical observations, and religious beliefs.
Highly developed agricultural techniques involving maize cultivation and sophisticated irrigation systems.
Organized into city-states, each with a powerful ruling elite and elaborate religious ceremonies.
These city-states often engaged in warfare with each other.
Experienced a decline beginning in the 9th century, the reasons for which are still debated, possibly a combination of environmental factors, political instability, and warfare.
Descendants of the Maya continue to live in the region today.

Aztec Society

The Aztec civilization emerged in central Mexico after the decline of earlier civilizations.
Arrived in the Valley of Mexico around the 1200s, establishing themselves and conquering other city-states by the 1400s.
Known for their powerful military organization and expansionist policies.
Established a vast empire, which stretched across much of central Mexico, with a capital city Tenochtitlan (modern-day Mexico City).
The Aztec capital was a major metropolis with impressive architecture, including temples, palaces, and marketplaces.
Complex social hierarchy existed, with the emperor at the top, followed by noble warriors, priests, and merchants.
Extensive trade networks were established integrating various parts of Mesoamerica, exchanging goods.
Main agricultural products included maize, beans, and squash. Used chinampas (floating gardens) to increase agricultural productivity.
Developed a complex religious system including human sacrifice as part of their rituals.
Hernán Cortés and the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the early 16th century, leading to the conquest and collapse of the Aztec empire by 1521.
