Study Notes
Ionic Compounds
- An ion is a charged atom formed by gaining or losing electrons.
- Ionic compounds are made of metal and non-metal ions.
- Metals lose electrons to form positive ions (cations).
- Non-metals gain electrons to form negative ions (anions).
- A cation is a positively charged ion.
- An anion is a negatively charged ion.
- Examples: sodium ion (Na+), fluoride ion (F-)
- Isoelectric ions have the same electron configuration as a noble gas.
Molecular Compounds
- A molecule is a group of two or more non-metal atoms bonded together covalently.
- Molecular compounds are formed by sharing electrons between non-metal atoms.
Bohr-Rutherford Diagrams
- Diagrams used to represent the structure of an atom.
- Show the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom.
- The arrangement of electrons in shells is shown.
Electronic Configuration and Valence Electrons
- Electronic configuration describes the arrangement of electrons in atomic shells.
- Valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost shell of an atom, determining its chemical properties and reactivity.
- Example: Sodium has 1 valence electron. Carbon has 4 valence electrons.
Types of Reactions (Summary)
- Single displacement: One element replaces another element in a compound.
- Double displacement: Ions from two different compounds switch places.
- Synthesis: Two or more substances combine to form a single substance.
- Decomposition: A substance breaks down into two or more simpler substances.
Properties of Ionic and Molecular Compounds
- Ionic compounds: High melting/boiling points, soluble in water (sometimes), conduct electricity when dissolved or melted.
- Molecular compounds: Low melting/boiling points, often insoluble in water, do not conduct electricity.
Acids and Bases
- Acids: Solutions with pH less than 7, taste sour, conduct electricity in water, react with metals, neutralize bases.
- Bases: Solutions with pH more than 7, feel slippery, taste bitter, conduct electricity in water, react with acid, neutralize acids.
- Neutral: pH of 7.
- Acid-base neutralization produces salt and water.
