Intensive Properties
- Temperature: A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. It is independent of the amount of substance present. Measured in units like Celsius (°C) or Kelvin (K). A fixed temperature indicates a consistent level of thermal energy within a sample.
- Density: Mass per unit volume of a substance. It is a measure of how tightly packed the particles are within a material. A property of a substance, independent of the amount present. Expressed as mass/volume. A higher density indicates greater compactness.
- Boiling Point: The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas at a specific pressure. It is a characteristic property of a substance, depending only on the nature of the substance and not on the amount. Boiling point is a fixed and consistent temperature value under standard conditions.
- Concentration: The amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent. Expressed in various units like moles per liter (mol/L) or grams per liter (g/L). A measure of the solute's proportion in a solution, independent of the overall volume or mass.
- Solubility: The maximum amount of a solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature and pressure. A qualitative measure of how well a substance dissolves in another. Is a property that varies between substances. Expressed as a mass or amount of solute dissolved in a specified solvent.
- Color: The visual property of a substance that reflects specific wavelengths of light. Dependent on the composition of the substance, leading to a distinct visible spectrum reflected or emitted. A characteristic feature of a substance independent of the amount.
Extensive Properties
- Mass: The measure of the amount of matter in a substance. It is additive; the mass of a whole object is the sum of the masses of its parts. Directly proportional to the amount of substance. Affected by the number of atoms or molecules present.
- Volume: The amount of space occupied by a substance. It is also additive—the volume of a whole object is the sum of the volumes of its parts. Dependent on the quantity of substance. The volume occupied by a substance is directly related to the quantity of matter.
- Surface Area: The total area of the surface of an object. It is dependent on the size and shape of the object. A changing surface area affects the reaction rate of a substance, for instance. Proportionate to the spatial dimensionality of the substance.
- Amount of Substance (Number of Moles): The quantity of a substance expressed in moles. A fundamental property in chemistry, reflecting the amount of substance present. Expressed in units of moles. Directly proportional to the amount of matter in a sample.
