Chemistry - An Overview of Analytical, Biochemistry, and Physical Chemistry

Chemistry is a fundamental science concerned with the properties, composition, structure, behavior, and reactions of matter. It is classified into several branches or subdisciplines based on their areas of study. In this article, we will explore three major branches of chemistry: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and physical chemistry.

Analytical Chemistry

Analytical chemistry is a branch of chemistry concerned with the analysis of components present in samples. This discipline is used to identify the elements and compounds present in samples as well as quantifying their amounts. Analytical techniques are used to analyze and measure chemical properties such as molecular weight, stoichiometry, purity, chemical structure, and catalyst performance. Examples of techniques used in analytical chemistry include: chromatography (e.g., gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography), spectroscopy (e.g., ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectrometry, and mass spectrometry), electroanalytical methods (e.g., cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse polarography, and amperometric titrations), and other techniques like calorimetry and potentiometry. These methods can be applied to various fields such as pharmaceuticals, environmental, food, forensic, clinical diagnostic, materials, polymer studies, etc..


Biochemistry is the study of chemicals involved in living organisms, including their synthesis, metabolism, and physiological functions. It involves understanding the molecular basis of biological processes, such as cellular growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli. Key areas of focus within biochemistry include proteins (enzymes, protein structures, and protein function), carbohydrates (sugars, starches, cellulose, glycoproteins, and glycolipids), lipids (fats, phospholipids, cholesterol, fatty acids, and glycerides), nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Physical Chemistry

Physical chemistry is the study of the macroscopic and microscopic phenomena associated with chemical systems, their energy relationships, and the structural and thermodynamic principles underlying these phenomena. It concerns itself with the structure of atoms and molecules, their interactions and transformations, and how they relate to bulk phase phenomena such as changes in temperature, pressure, volume, and composition of mixtures. Areas of interest in physical chemistry include atomic physics, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, thermodynamics, phase equilibrium, kinetics, reaction mechanisms, and interfacial phenomena. Physical chemists often employ mathematical models and computational tools to describe and predict chemical behavior and optimize chemical processes.
