Study Notes
Unit 5: Principles and Applications of Science II
- This unit covers principles and applications of science, focusing on chemistry, biology and physics.
- Assessment will be through a written exam split into three sections: chemistry, biology and physics.
- The exam will contain various question types, including multiple choice, calculations, short answer, and open response questions.
- Assessment outcomes (AOs) cover knowledge of facts, terms, definitions, and scientific formulae (AO1); scientific concepts, procedures, processes, and techniques (AO2); scientific information analysis, interpretation, and evaluation (AO3), and integrating concepts, procedures, processes, and techniques (AO4).
- Command words are used to define the task in the questions, such as describe, draw, explain, identify, name, state, calculate, comment, compare, complete, criticise, deduce, derive, describe, determine, devise, discuss, draw, evaluate, explain, give a reason, identify, specify, plot, predict, show that, sketch, state and justify, and write.
- The different sections (A, B, and C) of the exam cover topics of substances and their uses, properties and production; knowledge of human body systems, organs and functions, and properties of different types of materials.
- Topics include relating properties to uses, metal oxides and metal hydroxides, amphoteric behaviour, and properties and uses of substances (Chemistry).
- Topics in Part B include organs, and systems, and explore the events of the cardiac cycle including the effect of caffeine.
- Other sections cover topics include electrolysis, the production and use of useful materials, and transition metals and industrial catalysts (Chemistry).
- Information on the structure and function of blood and blood vessels, and the role and function of the heart and cardiovascular system (Biology).
- Further topics include the structure of the kidney nephron, and ultrafiltration and selective reabsorption (Biology).
- Methods for measuring lung function and the role of the pleural membranes (Biology).
- The principles of energy changes, enthalpy and energy changes in domestic and industrial applications (Physics) and the nature of energy and its conservation (Physics).
