28 Questions

What does the autonomic nervous system control?

Involuntary actions, such as sweating and heart rate

What is a main function of the somatic nervous system?

Controlling voluntary movements

How many main subsystems does the peripheral nervous system have?

Two

What is an example of an autonomic process?

Sweating on a hot day

What is the main difference between the autonomic and somatic nervous systems?

The autonomic system is involuntary, while the somatic system is voluntary

Which spinal nerves form the phrenic nerve?

C3/ 4/5

What is the main function of the musculocutaneous nerve?

Supplying muscles of the forearm and skin of the forearm

Which nerve supplies muscles of the hands?

Ulnar nerve

What is the main function of the obturator nerve?

Supplying the adductor muscles of the thigh

Which spinal nerves form the brachial plexus?

C5 - T1

What is the main function of the cervical plexus?

Supplying the skin of the face and neck

Which nerve supplies muscles of the anterior neck?

Cervical plexus

What is the main function of the lumbosacral plexus?

Supplying the adductor muscles of the thigh

What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system?

To respond to emergency situations

What is the effect of the sympathetic nervous system on heart rate?

It increases heart rate

What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?

To counteract the sympathetic nervous system and restore homeostasis

What type of functions are controlled by thinking about them?

Somatic functions

What is the effect of the sympathetic nervous system on digestion?

It decreases digestion

What is the name of the nervous system that is responsible for involuntary actions such as sweating?

Autonomic nervous system

What is the response triggered by the sympathetic nervous system in times of stress?

Fight or flight

Which of the following is NOT a result of the sympathetic nervous system's 'fight or flight' response?

Increased urinary function

What is the primary function of the autonomic nervous system?

To control involuntary actions

What is the division of the autonomic nervous system that is responsible for promoting relaxation and reducing stress?

Parasympathetic nervous system

What is the autonomic nervous system divided into?

Sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions

What is the sympathetic nervous system responsible for?

Regulating the 'fight or flight' responses

What is a result of the 'flight or fight' response?

Increased alertness and metabolic rate

What is decreased during the 'flight or fight' response?

Digestive and urinary function

What is NOT a result of the sympathetic nervous system?

Increased digestive function

Study Notes

Cervical Plexus

  • Cervical plexus (C1 - C4) supplies the skin of the face and neck
  • Other branches supply muscles of the anterior neck
  • Fibers of C3/4/5 cervical nerves form the right and left phrenic nerve, which supplies the diaphragm

Brachial Plexus

  • Brachial plexus (C5 –T1) supplies the arm and forearm
  • Musculcutaneous nerve (a) supplies the arm and skin of the forearm
  • Ulnar nerve (b) supplies muscles of the forearm, hands, and skin of the hands
  • Median nerve (c) supplies muscles of the forearm and hands

Lumbosacral Plexus

  • Lumbosacral plexus (T12 - S5) supplies the Adductor muscles of the thigh
  • Obturator nerve supplies the Adductor muscles of the thigh

Autonomic Nervous System

  • Divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
  • Sympathetic nervous system responsible for 'flight or fight' responses, including:
    • Increased alertness
    • Metabolic rate
    • Respiration
    • Blood pressure
    • Heart rate
    • Sweating
    • Decrease in digestive and urinary function
  • Parasympathetic nervous system counteracts the responses of the sympathetic system and restores homeostasis

Somatic Nervous System

  • Functions are managed by thinking about them
  • Contrasts with autonomic nervous system, which operates automatically

Quiz about the functions and branches of cervical nerves, including the cervical plexus and its supply to the skin and muscles of the face and neck.
