    Study Notes

    Cerebral Palsy

    • Cerebral Palsy is a group of permanent disorders that affect movement and posture.
    • These disorders are caused by non-progressive disturbances in the developing fetal or infant brain.
    • Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) is a common cause of CP.
    • IVH occurs when there is bleeding into the ventricles of the brain.
    • Preterm infants are at increased risk of IVH due to underdeveloped periventricular blood vessels.
    • The risk of CP increases with the severity of IVH.

Signs of Cerebral Palsy in Children

    • Developmental delays are an early sign of CP.
    • Children with CP may be slow to achieve milestones such as rolling over, sitting, crawling, and walking.
    • Abnormal muscle tone is another sign.
    • This can mean the body parts are floppy or too stiff.
    • Abnormal posture may also be present.

    Cramped, Synchronous Movements

    • Synchronous contractions of the limbs and trunk may occur.
    • These movements often appear rigid, not smooth.

    Milestones and Expected Development

    • Rolling: 4-8 months - rolls from back to stomach
    • Sitting:
      • 4-8 months - sits with hand support
      • 8-12 months - sits up alone
    • Cruising: 8-12 months
    • Walking: 1-2 years
    • Running: 1-2 years

    Jared's Development

    • Rolling: 12 months

    • Sitting: 10 months

    • Bunny Hopping: 16 months

    • Cruising: 20 months

    • Walking: 24 months

    • Running: Not yet walking

    • Steps: Not yet walking

    • Talking: 1-2 words together, 50-60 words total

    • Jared is significantly delayed in achieving many of the developmental milestones.

    • He is past the age range for many of the milestones he has not achieved.

    • His delays may indicate potential indications for further investigation regarding Cerebral Palsy.
