Study Notes
Cell Membrane
- Separates extracellular material from intracellular material
- Maintains cell integrity and controls passage of materials into and out of the cell
- Composed of a double layer of phospholipid molecules
- Proteins in the cell membrane provide structural support, form channels, act as receptor sites, function as carrier molecules, and provide identification markers
Nucleus and Nucleolus
- Nucleus is the control center of the cell
- Formed by a nuclear membrane around a fluid nucleoplasm
- Contains threads of chromatin with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the genetic material of the cell
- Nucleolus is a dense region of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and the site of ribosome formation
- Nucleus determines cell function and basic structure
Cytoplasm
- Gel-like fluid inside the cell
- Medium for chemical reactions
- Provides a platform for other organelles to operate within the cell
- Site of cell expansion, growth, and replication
- Materials move by diffusion, a physical process that works only for short distances
Cytoplasmic Organelles
- "Little organs" suspended in the cytoplasm
- Each type has a definite structure and specific role in cell function
- Examples: mitochondrion, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, and lysosomes
