Study Notes
Propeller Identification
- The holder of the Type Certificate or Production Certificate for a propeller, blade, or hub must legibly mark the information using a fireproof method, or attach a manufacturer's data plate with the information.
- The information must be marked in a way that prevents defacement.
- If a data plate is used, it must be attached to a non-critical location to prevent defacement or detachment during normal operation, and avoid loss in an accident.
- A person must not remove or alter a manufacturer's plate without CASA approval.
Part 42 of CASR 1998
- CASR Part 42 outlines Continuing Airworthiness requirements for aircraft and aeronautical products, including maintenance.
- This part covers Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisations (CAMOs) and authorization for CASA to issue MOS for CASR Part 42.
- CASR Part 42 is applicable only to Australian aircraft and their products when operated under a Regular Public Transport (RPT) Air Operator's Certificate (AOC).
- The CAMO, the AOC holder, and the Registered Operator can be the same person.
Legislative Documents
- CASR Part 42 regulations and the Manual of Standards (MOS) are two legislative documents.
- The two documents are supplemented by Acceptable Means of Compliance and Guidance Material (AMC/GM) and Advisory Circulars (ACs).
- A legal instrument empowered by regulation 145.015 of the CASR, Part 145 MOS Instrument 2011, specifies maintenance requirements and airworthiness.
Part 42 Subparts

- This subpart relates to copying and disclosing cockpit voice recorder information.
Unapproved Parts
- A part is unapproved if counterfeit, not approved, not a standard part, produced outside of CASA or NAA authorisation, modified outside of Part 21 approval, unserviceable or unsalvageable, or accompanied by a fraudulent document.
Control of Unapproved Parts
- If a part is unapproved, a label or tag must be applied within 2 days listing identifying information.
- Details of the part's origin and reason for unapproval, must be determined within 2 days, if possible.
- Store the part separately and secure it from servicable aeronautical products.
Reporting Unapproved Parts
- Reporting of unapproved parts is mandatory to CASA and the relevant Type Certificate Holder or Foreign Type Certificate Holder.
- A formal report to be completed and submitted.
Action Required if Parts are Not Required to Be Kept
