- EMS aims to provide the best possible care to all patients in need of service.
- For patients found in cardiopulmonary arrest, paramedics should examine the circumstances surrounding the event and take appropriate action.
- If end of life is determined, further supportive care should be given to the family on scene.
- Patients who deteriorate into cardiopulmonary arrest in the presence of EMS personnel will receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Law enforcement should be contacted early in the event of a death and certain procedures should be followed during pronouncement of death.
- CPR may be discontinued when effective spontaneous ventilation and circulation have been restored or when resuscitation efforts have been transferred to persons of no less skill than the initial providers.
- Medical cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be terminated in non-hypothermic adults if certain criteria have been met.
