Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Termination of Resuscitation

  • EMS aims to provide the best possible care to all patients in need of service.
  • For patients found in cardiopulmonary arrest, paramedics should examine the circumstances surrounding the event and take appropriate action.
  • If end of life is determined, further supportive care should be given to the family on scene.
  • Patients who deteriorate into cardiopulmonary arrest in the presence of EMS personnel will receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Law enforcement should be contacted early in the event of a death and certain procedures should be followed during pronouncement of death.
  • CPR may be discontinued when effective spontaneous ventilation and circulation have been restored or when resuscitation efforts have been transferred to persons of no less skill than the initial providers.
  • Medical cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be terminated in non-hypothermic adults if certain criteria have been met.
  • Traumatic cardiac resuscitation may be terminated in blunt or penetrating trauma if certain criteria have been met.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be withheld if certain criteria are met, such as the presence of rigor mortis or incineration.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be withdrawn if presented with a State of Florida DNR form or written by a verifiably licensed physician.
  • During each transport, the DNR form shall accompany the patient and may be revoked at any time.
  • Original body position and location should be documented and disposable supplies should be left in place.
