  • BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology
  • Conceived in the UK in 1988 and launched in 1990
  • Currently used in around 556,600 certified buildings worldwide
  • Over 2 million buildings have been registered for assessment since its launch in 1990

Assessment Structure

  • The scheme consists of 10 categories that describe sustainability through 71 criteria
  • Percentage-weighting factor is assigned to each category
  • 112 available credits are proportionally assigned to each category
  • Minimum achievement is required for the categories Energy and CO2, and Water and Waste

Assessment Methodology

  • Uses recognized measures of performance set against established benchmarks
  • Evaluates a building's specification, design, construction, and use
  • Measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology
