    Study Notes

    Bone Cell Types

    • Osteoprogenitor cells are stem cells that give rise to osteoblasts.
    • Osteoblasts are responsible for secreting the extracellular matrix of bone.
    • Osteocytes are mature bone cells that are surrounded by the extracellular matrix they secreted.
    • Bone-lining cells are found on the bone surface when there is no active growth and are derived from osteoblasts.
    • Osteoclasts are responsible for breaking down bone tissue during remodeling or repair.

    Bone Formation

    • Endochondral ossification is the process by which most bones develop from a cartilage model.
    • Intramembranous ossification is the process by which some bones, like the flat bones of the skull, form directly from mesenchymal tissue without a cartilage precursor.
    • Epiphyseal growth plates found at the ends of long bones are responsible for bone growth in length.

    Endochondral Ossification

    • Primary ossification center forms in the diaphysis (shaft) of the long bone.
    • Secondary ossification centers form in the epiphyses (ends) of the long bone.
    • Epiphyseal growth plate is a layer of cartilage between the primary and secondary ossification centers that allows for bone growth in length.
    • The epiphyseal growth plate contains zones of:
      • Reserve cartilage
      • Proliferation
      • Hypertrophy
      • Calcified cartilage
      • Resorption

    General Structure of Bones

    • Long bones have a tubular shape with two ends, called epiphyses, and a shaft, called diaphysis.
    • Metaphysis is the junction between the diaphysis and epiphysis.
    • Periosteum is a connective tissue membrane covering the outer surface of bones.
    • Endosteum is a single layer of cells that lines the inner surface of bone cavities and contains osteoprogenitor cells.

    Periosteum

    • The periosteum has two layers:
      • Outer fibrous layer: Dense connective tissue with collagen fibers.
      • Inner cellular layer: Contains osteoprogenitor cells and osteoblasts.

    Endosteum

    • The endosteum is a thin membrane lining the inner surface of bone cavities.
    • It contains osteoprogenitor cells and collagen fibers.

    Bone Tissue

    • Immature (woven) bone is formed during development and has a less organized arrangement of collagen fibers.
    • Mature (lamellar) bone has a more organized arrangement of collagen fibers.
    • Compact bone is the dense outer layer of bone.
    • Spongy (cancellous) bone is a meshwork of trabeculae found within bone.
