Block Instruments: General Requirements
- All instruments must be robust, approved, and of an appropriate type
- Sections with AC voltage may require protective measures per Section standards
- Instruments are typically used with physical conductors but can use Radio/Optical Fibre Cable when needed, with security measures
- Lightning dischargers are required and placed on both wires when applicable
- Access to the interior mechanism must be prevented to avoid irregular operation
- Block instruments need locking and sealing facilities with keys held by appropriate staff
- Unauthorized operation prevention measures are mandatory
- Telephone instruments should be integrated with block instruments ensuring proper isolation of the telephone circuits
- A bell push/plunger is needed for bell code exchange
- Isolated power supply (battery/DC-DC converter) is necessary for each line circuit
- Isolated power supplies only feed the block instrument and not other circuits; Housing is locked and sealed if within the SM's room. Integrated power supplies use DC-DC converter modules for each block.

Special Requirements of Single Line Token Block Instruments
- Visual indicators are required to show the status of the line; When normal and no train, “Line Closed” at stations; When line clear for a train “Train Coming From” at receiving station; When line clear for a train to leave a station “Train Going To” at sending station
- An instrument indicating current polarity is needed (incoming/outgoing)
- Cooperation with staff on the other end of the section is needed when operating
- Instruments need to be restored to "Line Closed" before changing between "Train Going To"/"Train Coming From" operations
- "Line Clear" receiving and granting operations can't happen simultaneously
- Token extraction should only be possible when set to "Train Going To"; Cannot change "Train Going To" conditions until token inserted
Special Requirements of Single Line Tokenless Block Instruments
- Visual indicators showing "Train on Line" at both stations when a train enters the block section
- Instruments to be immune to extraneous currents
- Cooperation with staff is still needed before changing to “Train Going To” or “Train Coming From” operational states
- "Train on Line" status should be automatic and maintained until the train leaves the section
- Instruments need to be restored to "Line Closed" before other operational changes
Operations: Push Button Tokenless Block Instruments
- "Train Going To" and "Train Coming From" operations may use cooperation from the other end’s station master
- A button in addition to the bell button is necessary for “Going To” position
- "Train on Line" status is automatic, initiated by the train, and maintained until it leaves the section; Additional indications are required
- Locking and sealing of the instrument housing and "Line Closed" restoration before operations are required
Special Requirements of Double Line Block Instruments
