Study Notes
Organization of Life
- Unicellular organisms perform all functions like digestion, respiration, and reproduction using a single cell.
- Multicellular animals have different groups of cells performing specific functions in a well-organized manner.
Tissue
- A group of similar cells with similar origin, along with intercellular substances, perform a specific function.
- This organization of cells is called tissue.
- The human body is composed of billions of cells, which are organized into tissues.
Types of Tissues
- There are four basic types of tissues: epithelium, connective, muscular, and nervous.
- Each type of tissue has specific functions and structures.
Epithelium Tissue
- Epithelium is a covering and protective tissue.
- Cells in epithelium tissue are always arranged in uniform layers.
- Epithelium tissue originates first during embryonic development.
- It has the power of regeneration.
- The word "epithelium" comes from the Greek words "epi" meaning "upon" and "thelia" meaning "growth".
Other Tissues
- Connective tissue connects structures, provides support to the body, and transports substances.
- Muscular tissue helps in locomotion and movement.
- Nervous tissue controls and coordinates functions.
Histology
- The study of tissue is called histology.
- The word "animal tissue" was coined by Bichat, while "plant tissue" was coined by Grew.
