Basal Ganglia Overview
- Basal ganglia are a group of nerve cells situated deep within the cerebral hemispheres.
- They are crucial for controlling voluntary movement and motor skills.
- They do not cause paralysis, sensory loss or ataxia.
Components of Basal Ganglia
- Caudate Nucleus: A C-shaped structure with a head, body, and tail. The head lies anterior to the thalamus, and the tail extends into the temporal lobe. It's connected to the putamen.
-
Lentiform Nucleus: A wedge-shaped structure.
-
Putamen: A larger, darker lateral portion of the lentiform nucleus. It's separated from the globus pallidus by a thin sheath of nerve fibers. The white matter lateral to the putamen is divided into layers by the claustrum.
- The external capsule is located between the putamen and the claustrum.
- The extreme capsule is located between the claustrum and the insula.
- Globus Pallidus: A smaller, lighter medial portion of the lentiform nucleus. Divided into medial and lateral segments. The medial segment is similar in terms of cytology and connects with the pars reticulata of substantia nigra.
-
Putamen: A larger, darker lateral portion of the lentiform nucleus. It's separated from the globus pallidus by a thin sheath of nerve fibers. The white matter lateral to the putamen is divided into layers by the claustrum.
- Amygdaloid Nucleus: Part of the limbic system and embryologically linked to the corpus striatum.
Corpus Striatum
- Structure: Caudate and Lentiform nuclei are functionally connected and collectively known as the corpus striatum
- Function: Primarily involved in extrapyramidal motor system. They control posture and movements, primarily by inhibiting unwanted motor functions.
- Nomenclature: Bands of grey matter pass from the lentiform nucleus across the internal capsule to the caudate nucleus, giving a striated appearance.
Striatum (Caudate & Putamen)
- The input portion of the corpus striatum
- Recieves input from cerebral cortex.
- Sends information to the thalamus through the G.P. (globus pallidus) segments.
- Parts compacta and reticulata of substantia nigra are vital relay stations.
Paleostriatum (Globus Pallidus)
- The output portion of the corpus striatum.
- Sends information to the thalamus affecting ventral lateral, ventral anterior, and centromedian nuclei.
- Receives input from the striatum.
- It also connected to the subthalamic nucleus and the pars reticulata of the substantia nigra.
Functions of Corpus Striatum
- Facilitates required behaviors and movements.
- Inhibits unwanted or inappropriate movements.
Dysfunctions of Corpus Striatum
- Abnormal motor control (dyskinesias)
- Alterations in muscle tone (hypertonia/hypotonia)
- Note: dysfunction does not cause paralysis, sensory loss or ataxia.
