    Study Notes

    Balance and Stability Assessment

    • Static Balance: Evaluates balance using the Romberg test and Modified Romberg test. Time the individual maintains balance, up to 30 seconds. Tests can be modified to increase difficulty by changing the base of support or removing visual cues. Different stances (flamenco, tandem, semi-tandem) are used.
    • Dynamic Balance: Measures balance during movement. Examined using the Star Excursion Test, recording distance in centimeters.
    • Functional Reach Test: Measures upper body forward reach. The distance reached is recorded, and this can be used to assess potential fall risk. Reference values are provided for different ages and genders (<25 cm may indicate daily activity limitations or fall risk).
    • Unterberger-Fukuda Test: Evaluates balance during a specific walking exercise. Participants walk in a set, controlled manner with eyes closed while maintaining arms extended forward. The rotation of the body in degrees is measured over one minute. Positive result is 45-60° rotation.

Timed Up and Go Test (TUG)

    • Evaluates mobility. Time taken for a participant to stand up from a chair, walk 3 meters, turn around, and safely return to the chair is recorded. A time exceeding 12 seconds signals greater fall risk or mobility difficulty.

    Practice Interventions

    • Individual Static/Dynamic Balance: Exercises broken into 3 levels of difficulty for each.
    • Partner Static/Dynamic Balance: Exercises broken into 3 levels of difficulty.
    • Group Static/Dynamic Balance: Exercises broken into 3 levels for static balance and 2 for dynamic balance.

    Other Balance Tests

    • Flamingo Balance Test: A static balance test part of the Eurofit battery.
    • Oseretsky Test: A balance test from the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency.
    • Ozeretski Test (Guilmain battery): A dynamic balance test.
