Types of Rubrics

  • Holistic Rubric: evaluates student performance by applying all criteria simultaneously, providing a single score based on overall judgment about the quality of student's work.
  • Analytic Rubric: evaluates student's work by using each criterion separately, providing specific feedback about the student's performance or product along several dimensions.

General and Task-Specific Rubrics

  • General Rubric: contains criteria that are general and can be applied across tasks.
  • Task-Specific Rubric: contains criteria that are unique to a specific task.

Affective Domain in Learning

  • Levels of Affective Domain: 1. Receive, 2. Respond, 3. Value, 4. Organize, 5. Characterize.

Affective Variables/Factors

  • Attitude: a person's reaction, whether negative or positive, favorable or unfavorable toward an object, activity, person, or environment.
  • Value: a person's or society's beliefs about good behavior and what things are important.
  • Belief: a person's convictions or opinions which they hold to be true without evidence.
  • Interest: a psychological state that draws a person's attention to an object, idea, or event.
  • Motivation: an inner drive, impulse, emotion, or desire that moves one to a particular action.
  • Self-Confidence: how a person feels about their abilities to accomplish a task or reach a goal.

Assessment Tools in Affective Learning

  • Self-Report Questionnaires: respondent is asked to answer questions about themselves, their behavior, emotions, feelings, or views.

Portfolio Assessment

  • A purposeful, on-going, dynamic, and collaborative process of gathering multiple indicators of students' growth and development in a course or program of study.
  • Essential Elements:
    • Cover Letter: "About the author" and "What my portfolio shows about my progress as a learner".
    • Table of Contents with numbered pages.
    • Entries: both core (items students have to include) and optional (items of student's choice).
    • Dates on all entries to facilitate proof of growth over time.
    • Drafts of oral and written products and revised versions.
