    Elements of Music

    • Pitch: The relative highness or lowness of a tone. Higher pitches have a faster vibration rate. Lower have a slower.

    • Volume/Intensity: The loudness or softness of a sound. Ranges from pianissimo (very soft) to fortissimo (very loud).

    • Tempo/Rate: The speed of a musical composition or section. Ballads have slow tempos, while dance songs have a fast rate.

    • Duration: The length of time during which a sound is produced. Different notes have different lengths (semibreve, dotted minim, minim, dotted crotchet, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver).

    • Timbre/Tone Color: The quality of sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another. It describes the sound's character or "color."

    • Rhythm: A consistent pattern or succession of identical or similar sounds. Shown through the succession of similar sounds throughout a song (introduction, stanza 1, chorus, refrain, stanza 2, chorus).
