Arnis: Filipino Martial Arts and Sports
- Arnis is a Filipino martial art. It can be practiced individually or with a partner. It uses one or two sticks for striking and blocking. It can also be used for self-defense.
History of Arnis
- Arnis was originally known as "Kali".
- In the 16th century, the Spanish banned the practice of Kali.
- The fighting system was renamed Arnis in the 1870s, possibly as a way to avoid the Spanish ban.
- Arnis is believed to be a corruption of the Spanish term "arnes".
Modern Arnis
- Remy Presas developed a modern Arnis in the 1960s.
- The goal was to create an injury-free training method.
- Arnis became part of the Palarong Pambansa in 2010.
- Arnis is also recognized as a National Martial Art and Sport (R.A. No. 9850) in the Philippines in 2009.
Forms of Play in Arnis
- Espada y Daga: This form uses a long, wooden sword and a short, wooden dagger.
- Solo Baston: This form uses a single stick, made of hardened rattan or wood.
- Sinnawali: This form involves two people. It uses two sticks, and focuses on weaving techniques and blocking/response methods.
Types of Arnis Competition
- Arnis Stick Fighting: This competition takes place in a square court measuring 8m x 8m.
- Arnis Anyo: This a demonstration of artistic, choreographed, offensive and defensive techniques. This competition involves individual and team events with different weapon divisions (single stick, double stick, sword/dagger). The winner is based on the judges score.
