    Study Notes

    Appendicular Skeleton

    • The appendicular skeleton makes up 126 bones of the human body.
    • The appendicular skeleton allows for movement of the body, including daily tasks and adjustments in posture.
    • It includes the pectoral(shoulder) girdle, upper limbs, pelvic girdle, and lower limbs:

    Pectoral Girdle

    • The pectoral girdle consists of the clavicle and the scapula.
    • The clavicle is the collar bone.
    • The scapula, or shoulder blade, is a flat, triangular bone.
    • The sternoclavicular joint is a synovial joint that provides key movements and stability.
    • The acromioclavicular joint is also a synovial joint of the shoulder.

    Upper Limb

    • The upper limb includes the humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges.
    • The humerus is the bone in the upper arm.
    • The radius is on the thumb side of the forearm
    • The ulna is on the pinky side of the forearm.
    • The carpals are the bones of the wrist.
    • The metacarpals are the bones of the hand.
    • The phalanges are the bones of the fingers.

    Shoulder Joint

    • The glenohumeral joint is a synovial ball & socket joint that allows for a wide range of movements.
    • The shoulder joint's joint capsule is weak and reinforced by four muscles called the rotator cuff muscles.
    • These muscles are important for stabilizing the shoulder joint.

    Wrist Joint

    • The joint between the radius and the scaphoid bone allows for flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction of the hand.

    Digits

    • Joints between the phalanges allow for flexion and extension of the digits (fingers).
    • Joints between the metacarpals and the phalanges allow for flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction of the digits.
    • The thumb is unique because it has a saddle-shaped joint which allow opposition of the thumb.

    Pelvic Girdle

    • The pelvic girdle connects the lower limbs to the axial skeleton.
    • The pelvis consists of two hip bones.

    Lower Limb

    • The lower limb includes the femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges.
    • The femur is the bone in the thigh.
    • The patella is the kneecap.
    • The tibia is the larger bone in the lower leg (medial).
    • The fibula is slender bone in the lower leg (lateral).
    • The tarsals are the bones of the ankle.
    • The metatarsals are the bones of the foot.
    • The phalanges are the bones of the toes.

    Hip Joint

    • The hip joint is also a synovial ball & socket joint.
    • The hip joint differs from the shoulder joint because it has more reinforcements due to the demands placed on it by the body weight.

    Knee

    • The knee is a hinge joint, which allows for flexion and extension of the lower leg.
    • The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is an important ligament in the knee that helps stabilize the joint.
    • The most common injury to the knee is an ACL tear.
