Study Notes
Anti-Armor Weapon Systems
- Javelin (M98A2): A man-portable, medium-range anti-tank weapon system. Composed of a reusable Command Launch Unit (CLU) and a missile round.
- CLU (Command Launch Unit): The reusable Javelin component. Features day/night sights, gunner controls, display indicators, and built-in self-tests.
- Javelin Round (M98A2): Includes a Launch Tube Assembly (LTA), Battery Cooling Unit (BCU), and the missile itself. Capable of defeating modern and future armor with a maximum range of 2,500 meters.
- Saber (M41A7): A heavy, mobile anti-tank precision-fire system. Components include the launch tube, Target Acquisition Subsystem (TAS), Traversing Unit (TU), tripod, Fire Control Subsystem (FCS), Lithium Power Source (LPS), and Position Attitude Determination Subsystem (PADS).
- PADS (Position Attitude Determination Subsystem): Requires at least 4 satellites for its position and 5 for a target's. Provides grid coordinates for both weapon and target positions. This subsystem achieves a 60-meter Circular Error Probable (CEP) at 6000 meters (FTL capability).
- Seeker Trigger: Activates the missile's seeker mode (lock-on) after adjustments to the tracking of the target.
- Round Interface Connector: Connects the missile to the launch system for data and image signals.
- NVS NOT COOL: A CLU display indicator that lights up if the night vision sight (NVS) hasn't reached operating temperature.
- Attack Mode: A CLU display indicator showing the missile's flight path to the target. Default is top attack, with direct attack as a selectable option.
- Aided Target Tracking: Improves missile tracking, leading to an increased hit and kill percentage.
- TU Elevation Brake: Improves the Saber's stability during launch.
- Hot Position: A firing position with good fields of fire, accommodating backblast; one per weapon.
- Cold Position: A position with maximum cover and defensibility.
- Fire Patterns: Standard methods for distributing anti-armor fire against multiple targets.
- Active Protection: Systems that protect targets by emitting countermeasures like jammers, radar, and fragmentation.
- Passive Protection: Armor that absorbs impacts without reacting with explosives, like cages, nets, and spaced armor.
- Reactive Protection: Armor systems that utilize explosives and non-explosives to protect against incoming attacks.
- Target Precedence: Prioritizing enemy weapons based on their threat level.
- Primary Position: Main firing position for a specific task (mission).
- Ambush Concept: Guides the positioning of anti-armor weapons.
- Categories of Anti-Armor Weapons: Light, medium, and heavy.
Anti-Armor Systems: Ranges (MAAWS)
- MAAWS HE (High Explosive): 1250m (airburst), 1300m (impact)
- MAAWS HEDP (High Explosive Dual Purpose): 500m (stationary/armored), 1300m (unarmored).
- MAAWS ADM (Armor-Piercing Discarding Sabot): 300m.
- MAAWS Illum (Illumination): 300m-2100m (Variable).
- MAAWS Illum Launch Angles:
- 300m-25 degrees.
- 2100m 25 degrees.
- 301m - 2099m 20 degrees.
- MAAWS Backblast: 90 degrees, 100m.
- MAAWS HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank): 700m.
Anti-Armor Systems: Ranges (Javelin)
- Javelin Max Range: 2500m
- Javelin Min Range:
- Top Attack: 150m
- Direct Attack: 65m
Anti-Armor Systems: Ranges (TOW 2B Aero)
- TOW 2B Aero Max Range: 4200m
- TOW 2B Aero Min Range: 200m
Anti-Armor Weapon System Considerations
- Saber: Launch tube and wire clearance (30"), friendly locations, backblast, standoff, minimum engagement range, system checks, water considerations (1100m), 36 inches of steel penetration.
- TOW: Ranges for various models/versions (e.g., BGM-71C, D, E, F, F-3, F-6, H ), warheads, probe extensions, thermal beacons, flight motors, precursor charges, fly-over-shoot-down capability (TOW 2B).
- LAV-25: Tow capable, 25mm can penetrate light armor, easily transportable.
- LAAW: Can penetrate T-62 and older tanks, highly portable, limited exposure time, MK-153 (600mm armor penetration).
- MG: Penetrates light armor (.50cal. 75" at 1500m / 40mm HEDP 2" at 2200m). Limits enemy visibility.
- RW: TOW & Hellfire capable, penetrates MBTs. Mobility, angle of attack, tracking time exposure, and time on station are key considerations.
- FW: Vulnerable to ADA (Air Defense Artillery) and SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses). Best used in rear against columns.
- Arty: 155mm, DPICM (for light skin), Copperhead requires laser designator, counter battery fire.
- General Anti-Armor System Considerations: Target precedence, primary and alternate/supplementary positions, cover, concealment, dispersion, mutual support, standoff, flank shots.
- Advantages/Disadvantages of ATGM systems.
- Fire Modes: Frontal, crossfire, depth fire, kill-window fire.
- Methods of Initial Engagement: On order, event oriented.
- Enemy Threat Levels: Most (can engage), dangerous (can engage), least (can't engage or not powerful enough).
