Study Notes
Anti-Armor Weapon Systems
- Javelin (M98A2): A man-portable, medium-range anti-tank weapon system. Composed of a Command Launch Unit (CLU) and a missile. Max range: 2500 meters.
- Command Launch Unit (CLU): Reusable part of the Javelin system. Features day and night sights, gunner controls, display indicators, and built-in testing.
- M98A2 Javelin Round: Includes launch tube assembly (LTA), battery cooling unit (BCU), and the missile. Designed to defeat current and future armor.
- Saber (M41A7): A highly mobile heavy anti-tank system. Its components include a launch tube, target acquisition subsystem (TAS), traversing unit (TU), tripod, fire control subsystem (FCS), lithium power source (LPS), and position attitude determination subsystem (PADS).
- Position Attitude Determination Subsystem (PADS): Requires at least 4 satellites for own position, and 5 for targets, providing grid coordinates. Achieves 60-meter Circular Error Probable (CEP) at 6,000 meters.
- Seeker Trigger: Activates the missile's seeker mode after track adjustments.
- Round Interface Connector: Connects the missile to the system for data/image transmission.
- NVS NOT COOL: CLU indicator signaling insufficient temperature in night vision sight.
- Attack Mode: CLU indicator displaying missile path to target. Default is top attack; direct attack is user selectable.
- FTL (Fire, Track, Launch): Capability of the Saber system to provide grid coordinates and improve accuracy.
- Aided Target Tracking: Improves missile guidance to enhance hit and kill percentages.
- TU Elevation Brake: Enhances Saber launch stability.
Weapon Positions
- Hot Position: Optimal firing position, with backblast considerations
- Cold Position: Position with maximum cover and defensibility.
- Fire Patterns: Standard tactics for distributing anti-armor fire on multiple targets.
- Active Protection: Systems, like jammers or radars, to protect against enemy attacks.
- Passive Protection: Armor not reacting to hits, e.g., cages, or spaced armor.
- Reactive Protection: Involves explosive and non-explosive measures.
- Target Precedence: Prioritizing enemy weapons based on threat level for engagement.
- Primary Position: Main firing position with a specific mission.
- Ambush Concept: Guides positioning of anti-armor weapons.
- Categories of Anti-Armor weapons: Light, medium, and heavy.
- HAW MAW LAW: Concept of heavy, medium, and light anti-armor weapons engaging targets at maximum range.
- Mass Surprise Fires (MSF): Simultaneous engagement of enemy forces with all anti-armor weapons.

Anti-armor Mission and Considerations
- Primary Anti-Armor Mission: Destroy enemy armored vehicles (tanks, IFVs, APCs).
- Secondary Anti-Armor Mission: Provide fire support to other targets (bunkers, crew-served weapons).
- Fire Positions (e.g.): Frontal Fire (least effective against facing targets), Crossfire (effective against facing targets), Depth Fire (targeting targets in depth), Killwindow Fire (engagement of targets moving between cover)
- Initial Engagement Methods (e.g.): Order-based, Event-oriented
- Enemy Threat Levels: Most dangerous (engaging friendly), Dangerous (possible engagement), Least Dangerous (no engagement threat)
- Positioning Keys: Cover/Concealment, Dispersion, Mutual Support, Standoff, Flank shots
- ATGM advantages and disadvantages
- LAV-25, LAAW, MG, RW, FW, Arty considerations: Particular advantages, disadvantages and capabilities.
- Distinction between Light, Medium, and Heavy Anti-Armor weapons
Other Important Terms
- Alternate Position: Same mission, different location.
- Supplementary Position: Different mission, use in combination with others.
- CLU Display Indicators (Examples): "Seeker Mode", "SEEK", "MSL CONN", "Missile Not Ready"
