Study Notes

Nasal Cavity

  • Divided into two halves by the nasal septum
  • Consists of two parts: nasal vestibule and proper nasal cavity
  • Boundaries:
    • Medial wall: nasal septum
    • Roof: cribriform plate of ethmoid
    • Floor: hard and soft palate

Lateral Wall of Nasal Cavity

  • Three nasal conchae: superior, middle, and inferior
  • Three nasal meatuses: superior, middle, and inferior

Medial Wall of Nasal Cavity (Nasal Septum)

  • Composed of bone and cartilage
  • Structures: perpendicular plate of ethmoid, septal cartilage, palatine process of maxilla, and vomer

Mucous Membrane of Nose

  • Olfactory region: located in the upper nasal cavity, contains olfactory cells
  • Respiratory region: situated outside of olfactory region, functions to warm, moisten, and clean inspired air

Paranasal Sinuses

  • Four paired sinuses: frontal, sphenoidal, maxillary, and ethmoidal
  • Each sinus has an opening that passes into the nasal cavity
  • Functions: air-filled cavities in the cranium surrounding the nasal cavity

Paranasal Sinuses and Their Site of Drainage

  • Frontal sinus: drains into the middle meatus via infundibulum
  • Maxillary sinus: drains into the middle meatus through semilunar hiatus
  • Sphenoidal sinus: drains into the sphenoethmoidal recess
  • Ethmoidal sinuses:
    • Anterior group: drains into the middle meatus
    • Middle group: drains into the middle meatus
    • Posterior group: drains into the superior nasal meatus
