    Study Notes

Anatomical Planes and Views of the Brain

    • The brain can be studied in slices along different planes: axial, coronal (transverse), sagittal, and horizontal.
    • In an axial slice, the top of the ear can be seen, as well as the left and right sides. However, the dorsal and ventral sides cannot be seen.
    • The spinal cord can be sliced along the transverse or coronal plane, which is the cross section.
    • The midline of the brain is important for anatomical terms. Medial refers to something close to the midline, while lateral refers to something away from the midline.
    • Many functions in the nervous system cross sides, which is known as contralateral.
    • The lateral view of the brain allows it to be divided into superior, middle, and inferior portions.
    • The brain is typically studied in slices because it is a three-dimensional object.
    • Slicing the brain along different planes provides different views of the same organ.
    • The transverse plane is also known as the coronal plane in human research.
    • In a coronal slice, the ears can be seen, as well as the left and right hemispheres. However, the anterior and posterior sides cannot be seen.
    • The sagittal plane is along the long axis of the brain. In a mid-sagittal slice, the eyes can be seen, but the ears are not visible.
    • The horizontal plane is also known as the axial plane. In an axial slice, the top of the ear can be seen, as well as the left and right hemispheres. However, the dorsal and ventral sides cannot be seen.
    • The intracranial space is the space between the skull and the brain.
