Study Notes
Amoeba Structure
- The cell is filled with two types of cytoplasm: ectoplasm (a thick jelly-like material that forms a thin layer just inside the cell membrane) and endoplasm (a more fluid, jelly-like material that fills the rest of the cell)
- Cell organelles are suspended in the endoplasm
- Endoplasm is also involved in movement
Osmoregulation
- Osmoregulation is the process by which cells regulate the concentration of water within the cell
- Excess water is eliminated through the contractile vacuole, which is actively filled with water and surrounded by mitochondria that produce the necessary energy
- The vacuole bursts and expels the water when it reaches the surface of the cell
Movement
- Movement is achieved through pseudopodia, which develop in response to environmental conditions
- Chemotaxis: chemicals released by prey attract Amoeba, while other conditions repel it
- Endoplasm flows into the pseudopodia, causing Amoeba to move in that direction
- This type of motion is described as amoeboid motion
Feeding
- Amoeba feed by a process known as phagocytosis
- A layer of cell membrane surrounds the food particle, forming a food vacuole
- Lysosomes fuse with the food vacuole and supply digestive enzymes to break down the food
- Products are absorbed through the membrane into the cytoplasm, while undigested food is left behind through egestion
Reproduction
- Reproduction occurs through binary fission
- Amoeba withdraws its pseudopodia and becomes rounder in shape when it reaches a certain size
- Nucleus divides into two, and the two nuclei move apart
- Cytoplasm divides in two, with each half enclosing a nucleus, resulting in two identical daughter cells
- The process takes approximately 30 minutes
