Questions and Answers

What is the buccal alveolar plate?

  • The bone that forms the interdental septum.
  • The bone that forms the interradicular septum.
  • The inner layer of the alveolar bone that lines the lingual surface of the tooth.
  • The outer layer of the alveolar bone that lines the buccal surface of the tooth. (correct)
  • Where is the interdental septum located?

  • Between the roots of two adjacent teeth. (correct)
  • Between the alveolar bone and the gingiva.
  • Between the roots of the same tooth.
  • Between the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament.
  • What is the difference between the interdental septum and the interradicular septum?

  • The interdental septum is between the roots of the same tooth, and the interradicular septum is between the roots of different teeth.
  • The interdental septum is between the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament, and the interradicular septum is between the alveolar bone and the gingiva.
  • The interdental septum is between the roots of different teeth, and the interradicular septum is between the roots of the same tooth. (correct)

    Study Notes

    Alveolar Bone Study Notes

    • Structure and Function: The alveolar bone is the bone of the upper or lower jaw surrounding and supporting the roots of teeth.
    • Composition: Alveolar bone is primarily mineralized connective tissue, roughly composed of 60% inorganic matter, 25% organic matter and approximately 15% water.
    • Importance: The alveolar bone exists due to teeth; if teeth are extracted, it resorbs. Bone development is dependent on the presence of teeth. If teeth do not erupt, the alveolar bone does not develop.
    • Layers of Alveolar Process: The alveolar process is comprised of three layers: alveolar bone proper, cancellous bone, and cortical bone.
    • Alveolus: The alveolus is a socket in the alveolar bone that houses a tooth's root.
    • Cortical Bone: Forms the outer wall of the mandible and maxilla, providing support to the tooth socket. Thicker in molar regions, thinner in incisors and canines. Not visible on radiographs.
    • Cancellous Bone: A lattice-like structure filling the interior of the alveolar process. Located mainly in interproximal regions.
    • Alveolar Bone Proper: The thin layer lining the socket that surrounds the tooth root.
    • Features of Alveolar Bone: Healthy alveolar bone differs from diseased bone. Radiographic assessments are vital in identifying periodontal disease. Bone needs to be assessed to determine healthy or diseased. Periodontitis (periodontal disease) can cause loss of alveolar bone, impacting supporting structures.
    • Supporting Structures: The alveolar bone is a key component of the periodontium, playing an important role in supporting teeth.
    • Pre-reading: Prior knowledge in anatomy and pre-reading are considered necessary prior to learning sessions.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Students should be able to identify structure and function of alveolar bone.
    • Knowledge of features of alveolar bone, varying from health to diseased states, should be understood.
    • Students will recognise the significance of radiographic evaluations in periodontal disease diagnosis.

    Pre-Session Reading

    • Essential pre-session reading is from Gehring, Shin, and Willmann (2018): "Foundations of Periodontics for the Dental Hygienist," pages 13-15 for knowledge of alveolar bone anatomy.
