  • Characterized by internal locus of control, self-confidence, and high-energy traits
  • Related to the Big 5 dimension of conscientiousness

Leader Motive Profile Theory

  • Developed by David McClelland
  • Leadership success based on achievement, power, and affiliation
  • Ideal profile: high need for power, greater need for affiliation, and moderate need for achievement

Power

  • Capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events
  • Essential to leaders because it is a means of influencing followers
  • Without power, there is no leadership
  • Two types:
    • Personalized power (use of power for personal gain at the expense of others)
    • Socialized power (help oneself and others)

Effective Leaders

  • Have a moderate need for achievement, characterized by high-energy and openness to experience
  • Have a lower need for affiliation, which doesn't get in the way of influencing followers
  • May risk falling into the "bad-guy" role or the dangers of socialized power
