    Study Notes

In 8th grade mathematics, students learn the basics of geometry and algebraic expressions. They start by learning the basic terminology used in geometry such as points, lines, planes, angles, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, etc., along with their properties. At this stage, they also study different types of geometric figures like squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, rhombuses, kites, etc.. Students also explore various relationships between shapes when they're combined together – called compositions of transformations. Additionally, they learn how to apply these concepts to solve word problems using appropriate transformations. With regard to algebra, 8th graders are introduced to the concept of algebraic expressions which includes variables whose values are unknown. This introduces them to some fundamental principles of algebra including addition and subtraction of like terms, multiplication and division of monomials, order of operations, solving linear equations, quadratic equations, fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, rates, proportions, among others. By the end of 8th grade, students should have mastered all the foundational concepts necessary for more advanced courses in high school like precalculus, calculus, and statistics. From here, they build on the knowledge gained so far through intermediate algebra, geometry, algebra II, precalculus and other higher level courses.
