Carbon Monoxide Monitoring - Fire Department
-
Purpose: To provide procedures for using Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring equipment.
-
Scope: Applicable to all Fire Department members who use or might use CO monitoring equipment.
-
Primary Responsibility: Determining if a CO problem exists and providing emergency medical care if needed.
-
CO Monitor Preparation:
- Ensure monitor is fully operational.
- Select a multi-gas instrument measuring at least O2 and CO.
- Perform instrument self-test in fresh air.
-
Initial Occupant Contact:
- Evacuate all residents immediately.
- If CO poisoning symptoms are present (headache, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, etc.), call for a medic unit.
-
Testing for CO:
- Sample outside air away from the building and vehicles.
- Test oxygen (O2) content inside the structure. If below 19.5%, use SCBA for entering.
- Inspect potential CO sources: gas-fired appliances (furnaces, boilers, water heaters, dryers, fireplaces), vehicles operating inside or near entryways (generators, motors).
- Obtain readings while appliances are in operation.
-
High CO Readings:
- Document all readings and locations.
- Notify the gas company if readings exceed 10 ppm in residential structures or 35 ppm in commercial/industrial structures.
- Identify the source of CO and shut off fuel supply if possible.
- Ventilate the structure as needed.
-
CO Detectors in Residence:
- Recommend occupants and responsible party check CO detectors according to manufacturer's instructions.
- Fire Department personnel cannot disconnect or deactivate homeowner-owned detectors.
-
Carbon Monoxide Information:
- Odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that can be deadly.
- Produced by combustion and fuel-burning processes.
- Symptoms can mimic the flu, progress to unconsciousness, and death.
- CO is a byproduct of many household appliances under fault or unusual conditions.
