- Marriage, Family, and Kinship is the focus of this lesson
- Lesson Objectives:
- Discuss the nature of marriage, family, and kinship in the family
- Value the significance of marriage and family in society
- Recognize and analyze challenges Filipino families face today
- The New Family Code of the Philippines: Effective August 3, 1998. defines marriage as a special contract. A permanent union between a man and a woman established legally for conjugal and family life.
- Alternative Definition of Marriage: Light and Keller (1985) define marriage as a socially recognized union involving two or more individuals encompassing sexual and economic responsibilities and rights.
- Aspects of Marriage:
- Legal View: Marriage is a contract, not unlike other contracts, allowing legal separation, annulment, and support actions.
- Religious View: Marriage is a sacrament, an unbreakable bond between a man and a woman, "What God has joined together, let no man separate"
- Definition of Family:
- Ferraro and Andreatta (2010): Family is a social and economic unit consisting of one or more parents and children.
- Burgess and Locke (1963): A group united by ties of marriage, blood, or adoption, sharing a common culture.
- Murdock (1949): A social unit characterized by common residence, economic cooperation, and reproduction,
Importance of Marriage and Family
- Family: The most basic and oldest social unit of humans, providing social, psychological & emotional needs (warmth, intimacy, affection, love, nurturance, care, and security).
- Marriage: Ensures the continuity of the family and perpetuation of the human species, systematized & institutionalized for procreation and regulating sexual behavior.
