Parts of the Respiratory System
- Major parts include nasal cavity, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, diaphragm, pharynx, larynx, and epiglottis.
Function of the Respiratory System
- Supplies blood with oxygen for delivery to body cells.
- Accomplished through breathing: inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
Air Entry Points
- Air enters the body through the nasal cavity (nose) and/or mouth.
Air Pathway
- After entering, air travels to the trachea, which leads to the lungs.
Bronchi
- The "tubes" branching from the trachea are called bronchi.
Alveoli
- Small, stretchy air sacs located at the end of bronchioles, crucial for gas exchange.
Gas Exchange in Alveoli
- In the alveoli, oxygen passes through walls into capillaries, while carbon dioxide is expelled.
The Diaphragm
- A strong muscle located just below the lungs.
- It moves downwards and upwards to assist in inhalation and exhalation.
Pharynx
- A cavity situated behind the nose and mouth, connecting them to the esophagus.
Larynx
- Serves as an air passage to the lungs and contains the vocal cords, acting as the voice box.
Interaction with Circulatory System
- Fresh oxygen enters the lungs, then goes to the left side of the heart.
- The heart pumps oxygenated blood into the bloodstream to nourish cells.
Epiglottis
- A flap in the throat that prevents food or liquid from entering the windpipe during swallowing.
