Best AI quiz generators: notes, PDFs and checked practice

Best AI quiz generators: notes, PDFs and checked practice Header Image

For students turning lecture notes into varied, editable practice, Quizgecko is a sensible AI quiz generator to shortlist. For free self-testing alongside source exploration, start with NotebookLM, which Google's current help calls Gemini Notebook. Revisely suits a focused upload-to-quiz workflow. Teachers who need questions inside an existing classroom platform should compare QuestionWell's exports with Wayground's delivery and reports.

The best AI quiz generator depends on what happens after generation. Do you need to answer questions alone, correct and export them, or assign them to a class? Those are different buying decisions.

Quizgecko publishes this comparison and is included in it. We checked official product documentation on October 9, 2026. This is a comparison of documented capabilities and limits, not a test of which product generates the most accurate questions.

Which AI quiz generator fits your job?

Choose by source, question format and destination. A tool can accept your PDF yet still lack the export format or answer-review workflow you need.

Tool Best fit in this comparison Documented source inputs Review and delivery Main buying caveat
Quizgecko Students making mixed practice from their own material Notes, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, URLs and other media Editable questions, AI feedback, online practice and plan-dependent exports Limited free course creation; check the export entitlement
NotebookLM / Gemini Notebook Free self-testing while exploring a source collection Pasted notes, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Google Slides and more Quiz hints, answer explanations and retakes Current quiz help does not document LMS quiz export
Revisely A focused converter for notes and document-based quizzes Text, PDF, Word, PowerPoint and images Question editing, AI-assessed answers and sharing Free non-AI quizzes do not mean unlimited free AI generation
QuestionWell Teachers authoring questions for another platform Readings and limited free imports; paid PDF, DOCX, PPTX and images Question editing, assignments and classroom-platform exports Free imports, AI edits and exports have separate quotas
Wayground, formerly Quizizz Teachers delivering live or asynchronous classroom quizzes Documents, slides, web links and prompts Editable assessments, sessions, reports and printable worksheets Features and free AI access can differ by region and school history

This shortlist covers student self-testing and classroom authoring without adding general chatbots or trivia builders. If you are choosing a whole study workspace rather than a quiz workflow, our AI study tools comparison covers that broader decision.

What can you actually do for free?

Free access needs a unit: courses, document pages, imports or exports. "Unlimited quizzes" is incomplete if AI creation or source uploads are restricted.

Tool Free allowance verified for this review Paid billing basis
Quizgecko Basic allows one new course per month; one file per generation, up to 50 MB Plus and Ultra subscriptions; check the current local offer and billing interval
NotebookLM / Gemini Notebook Standard access is free; up to 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook Higher limits through eligible Google AI, Workspace or Cloud plans
Revisely Basic lists unlimited non-AI quizzes, five pages per document upload and 50 AI-assessed answers Monthly or annual subscription; currency and displayed price varied between checks
QuestionWell Two material imports, five question exports and five AI question edits per month Premium is $7 monthly or $70 billed annually, displayed as $5.83/month
Wayground Starter documents a 20-resource storage limit, with regional differences Individual or school/district upgrades; verify the offer for your account

Google's current usage guide describes compute-based quotas and account-level usage indicators. We do not repeat older claims of a fixed ten free quizzes per day. Revisely's public Basic table does not establish an unlimited free AI-generation allowance either.

Wayground requires particular care. Its Starter guide includes region-dependent AI access. A separate notice gives unlimited AI usage to accounts transitioning from Free-For-Schools in September 2026. Neither statement establishes the same allowance for every new user.

Treat these as a dated snapshot. Country, taxes, app-store billing and school licenses can change what you pay. Before starting a trial, check its end date, renewal charge and cancellation route, as the FTC's subscription guidance advises.

Which tool should students shortlist?

When does Quizgecko make sense?

Choose Quizgecko when you want more than multiple-choice recognition from one source. Its AI quiz generator supports multiple choice, select all that apply, true/false, short answer, fill-in-the-blank and matching. Generated questions are editable, and short-answer practice includes AI grading and feedback.

The same course can include flashcards and notes. That is useful if you want to keep corrected practice alongside the material you review. PDF, worksheet and LMS export options depend on the plan and format; verify your required destination before subscribing.

Our recommendation is about workflow fit. We have not established that Quizgecko writes better questions than the other tools. If you only want free source exploration with occasional self-testing, Google's option deserves the first look.

When does NotebookLM make sense?

Choose NotebookLM, named Gemini Notebook in the official help checked here, when you want to explore uploaded sources and then quiz yourself. Google documents PDF, PowerPoint, Google Slides and pasted-text inputs. Its quiz controls include hints, answer explanations, results and retakes.

Check the distinction between studying inside a notebook and moving questions elsewhere. Google's help documents CSV download for flashcards, but the quiz-controls section does not establish a corresponding LMS export. Do not buy an upgrade assuming those are the same feature.

When does Revisely make sense?

Choose Revisely when a focused document converter is enough. Its official pages document notes, PDFs, Word documents, slides and image inputs, along with quiz editing and AI answer assessment.

The public page offers monthly and annual billing, but it returned different currency prices during this review. Check the total in your checkout. For teachers, quiz exports to Moodle, Canvas and Blackboard are documented on professional and business plans. The consumer subscription price alone does not establish that export access.

Which tool should teachers shortlist?

Choose QuestionWell when you already have a place to deliver quizzes and need help authoring the questions. Its free plan includes multiple-choice and discussion questions, while Premium adds short answer, true/false, fill-in-the-blank and multiple select. Its pricing table explicitly lists exports to platforms such as Kahoot, Quizizz and Canvas.

Choose Wayground when live sessions, asynchronous assignments and class reports are the main job. It documents generating assessments from PDFs and presentations, then changing questions and answer options before publication. Printable worksheets provide another delivery route. Check which question types your account permits; the full product's format list is not the free plan's entitlement.

A student studying alone does not automatically need classroom management. A teacher assigning to thirty learners needs more than an attractive answer key. Test the delivery route as carefully as the generator.

How should you check questions from notes, PDFs or slides?

Use one bounded topic and keep the source open. If you want to create quizzes from your notes, include the definitions and exceptions rather than a list of headings. For a PDF-to-quiz workflow, inspect extracted content when the file contains scans, diagrams or tables.

Here is an authored example, not output from any product:

A library lends books for 14 days. A borrower may renew once for another 14 days, unless another reader has reserved the book. Reference books stay in the library.

Illustrative question Correct answer What to check
How long is the initial loan? 14 days The answer must not confuse the initial period with a renewal
Can every borrowed book be renewed? No; a reservation prevents renewal The exception must survive generation
A reader wants to take a reference book home. Is that allowed? No The answer must follow the source rather than typical library rules

A weak question might ask, "How many times can any book be renewed?" Its wording ignores both the reservation exception and reference books. Editing it matters more than adding another twenty items.

For a small trial, check ten questions. Record whether each answer is supported, the wording is unambiguous, wrong options are actually wrong, and feedback explains the relevant rule. If export matters, import that corrected sample into your destination. This is a proposed reader check, not a benchmark we ran.

NIST's Generative AI Profile identifies confidently false output as a risk. A generated explanation needs checking too. Do not let the tool's explanation become the only evidence for its own answer.

What should you check before uploading school material?

Check permission, personal data and age requirements before importing a file. Use your own notes or material you are allowed to process. A download button on a textbook does not establish permission for AI ingestion.

For schools, the U.S. Department of Education's privacy resources include a checklist for evaluating how an educational service collects, uses and transmits information. UK Department for Education guidance advises checking approved tools, personal-data handling and generated results. UNESCO's education guidance also addresses data protection and human validation. These checks matter when choosing classroom software, not just after buying it.

Can an AI quiz replace an official practice exam?

No. A quiz based on your notes does not establish that its coverage, difficulty or scoring matches an exam. Use the official exam provider's current materials for representative items and requirements. Use AI-generated questions as reviewed practice alongside those materials.

How was this comparison made?

Quizgecko reviewed five products' public first-party product, help and pricing pages on October 9, 2026. We compared source inputs, question review, formats, delivery, exports and free limits. Prices are the public web figures where visible, not a standardized checkout quote for every country.

We did not buy competitor subscriptions, upload a shared source to each tool or assess comparative accuracy, speed, accessibility or learning outcomes. The library questions above are illustrative. Missing documentation is marked as a verification gap, not proof that a capability cannot exist.

Start with the destination: personal practice, exported questions or a class assignment. Then try one permitted source and check the result before paying for a longer subscription.
