Write your answers on your paper. KNOW AND UNDERSTAND CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding on how to examine the functions and importance of education in the society. CHECKPOINT: What are the functions and importance of education in the society? What is Education? “Education is nothing but studying different kinds of subjects to gain knowledge and understanding and trying to apply it in daily life”. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela The Five Functions of Formal Education 1. Socialization Education is used to promote the norms and values of a society from one generation to the next. Social institutions such as schools become important as the family can no longer provide the tools and important knowledge needed by the young student. This is the reason why formal education was developed. From early childhood, students in formal education learn their native language, as well as the mathematical skill they will need to function in society. Such learning expands in secondary and tertiary education, as students are prepared to adapt to his changing realities. 2. Social Integration Because education is used to transmit norms and values, it can also be regarded as a unifying force. It promotes desired values and ensures conformity. In cases of deviance, it provides widely known approaches to convert. For example, mandatory education laws in the US ensured that all immigrants to the country knew what was desirable and undesirable in the US society because they had to be educated in the US schools. “Unido, Junto avanza con el EduKalidad Cree, junto junto puede!” Prepared by: MARIA ELMA JANE C. QUISEL / Senior High School Teacher II Maria Clara L. Lobregat National High School 2 3. Social Placement Formal education helps students to discover approved statuses and roles that will help the society’s longevity. Educational systems consider the various talents and interests of students and attempt to provide opportunities that provide a good fit for these talents and interests. Formal education, in a way, is an equalizer. It focuses on achievement, rather than educational. 4. Cultural Innovation Educational institutions are the center of cultural innovation because they stimulate intellectual inquiry and promote critical thinking. It enables new ideas to develop, as well as provide bases for new knowledge to become accepted in the mainstream. Through schools, theories are proven; technologies are improved; and cultures can adapt to the changing society. 5. Latent Functions of Formal Education As more families have both parents working at the same time, schools tend to become an institution of childcare. As children have to be in school, parents can have time to perform their economic duties without being burdened with childcare duties. Many of the social ties a child forms in the course of their schooling are lasting social networks and would impact various aspects of their lives. Reasons Why Education is Important Education guides you to develop as good citizens of the society. It helps to protect ourselves from the other harmful events and helps you keep educating of current dangers, diseases, and ways to face or prevent them. 1. Comfortable and stable life It is expected by everyone that they need to live a life of comfort and luxury, but to make that happen either the person needs to be stable or educated. To earn a better life and live a comfortable life, a person needs to understand the value of education. Most of the people think education is a waste of time, as they have their own strong success stories which usually cannot be related to everyone practically. But if a person has even a small portion of knowledge, then it is possible that they can manage their life in a better way compared to uneducated people. 2. Improvement in standard of living Most of the people think that education can lead a person to a position where he/she can fulfill all of his/her dreams and expectations. But most of them do not believe in such thinking that education creates such a difference in one’s life. Also, education alone cannot make one successful unless he/she works really hard to get to that position. If a person starts dedicating himself/herself for quality of education, then it is possible that the result of such dedication will be fruitful. 3. Provides safety and security If a person needs a life with safety and security, then he/she needs to understand the value of education in his/her daily life. To lead a life of safety and security the person needs to take active participation in educational activities. These educational activities will provide them the knowledge which can help them live a better “Unido, Junto avanza con el EduKalidad Cree, junto junto puede!” Prepared by: MARIA ELMA JANE C. QUISEL / Senior High School Teacher II Maria Clara L. Lobregat National High School 3 life. These kinds of drastic change can be initiated with the help of education in one’s life. 4. Equality This is the only way where a person of any caste and region will maintain a respectable position with the help of education. There are different kinds of personalities who have different opinions but still acquire the success holding their respect. All these can take place with the help of education. It maintains equality between people even if they are holders of different sets of opinions. 5. Provides confidence Education is only a matter of thinking which can provide change in one’s level of confidence. Sometimes it happens that people experience embarrassment because of lack of education. And to overcome such embarrassment, people need to come forward and accept the benefits of education which can change their life with full of confidence. Eventually, it changes the opinions among people’s work and their stability. 6. Prevents unlikely events Sometimes when we are unaware of things it can create a certain level of change in our life. Therefore, it would be advisable that a person needs to educate himself/herself about the things which he/she is unaware of. And eventually, education can make us self-reliant and confident enough to face such unlikely situations. SAQ1: How do you examine the functions of education in the society? Confirming to this meaning Durkheim defined education as “the action exercised by the older generations upon those who are not yet ready for social life. Its object is to awaken and develop in the child those physical, intellectual and moral states which are required of him both by his society as a whole and by the milieu for which he is specially designed”.
