Tourism  the act of travelling & visiting an area away from one’s home.  It consists of activities for travelers and processes of spending time away from home for relaxation, pleasure, business, or other purposes.  One of the fastest growing sectors of the economy of our time.  2nd largest provider of employment WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY?  The tourism industry is interdependent with the hospitality sector, since it relies on the layer to provide enhanced service quality.  The hospitality industry primarily oversees crucial services that serve as suppliers for the tourism sector. The hospitality industry effectively collaborates with the tourism industry by ensuring the provision of safety measures for travelers, enhancing their overall experience. It is evident that the tourism industry heavily depends on the hospitality sector for both domestic and international tourism. 4 ELEMENTS OF TRAVEL 1. Distance- the measure used to distinguish travel away from home. It determines the form of transport needed for the journey. All of the segments of the industry are interrelated to deliver kind and adequate services to guests. Definition of Terms:  Hotelier: an owner/manager of one or more hotels.  Restaurateur: an owner/ manager of a restaurant  Tourist Destination- a broad geographic area that offers a range of attractions, accommodations, infrastructure, and other services catered towards visitors.  Tourist Attraction- a specific site, landmark, or activity that draws visitors, such as a museum, theme park, or natural wonder. Definition of Terms:  Amenities: things that are designed to provide comfort and enjoyment to the guests that increase the attractiveness of the property.  Ex. Soap, Shampoo, Tooth Brush, Breakfast Meal, etc.  Facilities: refer to a building, room, or equipment designed to serve a particular function, usually recreational.  Ex. swimming pools, boutique shop, gym, spa, restaurant, parking lot, TV Definition of Terms:  Guest/Customer: A recipient of hospitality at the home or table of another.  Service: The process of helping guests by addressing their wants and needs with respect and dignity in a timely manner. Definition of Terms:  Back of the House: department or personnel that perform behind-the-scene that customers/guests do not see.  Front of the house: department or personnel that work with direct contact with guest.  Peak Season: a period of time in which tourism activities are at its highest level for a particular destination  Lean Season: a period of time in which tourism activities are at its lowest level for a Characteristics of Tourism:  Consumer travels to the product  Product of tourism are not used up.  Labor-intensive  People-oriented  Multi-dimensional- It is dependent on many and varied activities which are separate but interdependent. Characteristics of Tourism:  Seasonal  Dynamic- characterized by the changing ideas and attitudes of its customers and therefore must always be prepared and willing to adjust to these changes.  Inseparability- Service cannot be separated from the service providers.  Intangibility Characteristics of Tourism:  Inflexibility- Tourism and Hospitality products cannot react to spontaneous fluctuations in demand. Variability- occurs because the same type of room or food provides a distinct level of pleasure and satisfaction to different guests at different times so the guests might feel distinct experiences. Heterogeneity- The system of products and services can be different from one hotel to another. The guests have various choices to choose from.
