STAGE 3 Unit focus: Summer Holidays Detective Agency Text focus: Narrative The Case Of The Missing Lunch Boxes Chapter 5 “Who are you?” Ola stammered. The others were trying to back away behind her, but the tunnel was too narrow. “I’m Dennis,” said Dennis. “This is my find, and you can’t have it!” “We don’t want any trouble,” Kimmy said. She was trying her hardest to put on a brave voice. “What are you doing down here?” Dennis asked. His voice wasn’t mean; he seemed surprised more than anything. “We found the cave earlier,” Mo explained. “Then we found this.” He handed the letter to Dennis, who read it quickly. “I was right!” he exclaimed, jumping up and pumping his fist. “I knew it!” “You knew about the treasure?” Edward asked. “Oh, I’d heard rumours for years,” Dennis said, pu ng his pick down. He sat down and leaned against the wall of the tunnel. The children did the same. “I tried to tell the local council and even the university, but they all said I was mad. I thought I’d come and look myself. I’ve been exploring these caves for years. I thought I’d found everything in the main cavern, but it seems you looked a little bit harder.” “Mo kicked one of the crates, and it broke,” Ola explained. “I found the letter inside.” “Well, if the treasure is hidden somewhere in here, we should try to find it,” Dennis said. He stood up and pointed to the wall. “I’ve been trying to pick my way through here for the past few days. I think I’m finally close to breaking through.” The children stood up and looked at the wall. Sure enough, there was a wide crack through to a cave on the other side. “I bet we could fit through there,” Mo said. all resources ©2024 Literacy Shed http://www.literacyshedplus.com “Stand back, eager beaver,” Dennis said. Once the children were safely out of the way, he swung his pick. The sound made the children flinch, and sparks rained down over them. A few blows later, the hole was wide enough for them all to fit through. Dennis went first to make sure it was safe. The light of his head torch cast strange shadows, but the cavern on the other side was much smaller than the one they’d been in before. “That must be it,” Edward said. He pointed to a small wooden crate up against the wall. Together, the five of them dragged the crate back through the hole, along the tunnels and out into the sunlight. “Drat, it’s locked,” Dennis said. “I really don’t want to destroy it.” Mo looked shocked. “The key!” he shouted, pulling it from his pocket. It fit the lock easily. They swung the lid open and looked down onto a pile of bottles, papers and clothes. Mo looked devastated. “Where’s the gold?” It turned out that the items in the chest were just as old as the letter suggested, and very valuable. The local museum arranged a press conference, and the five adventurers managed to get their names and photographs in the newspapers. Of course, Ola made sure the journalist referred to them as the Summer Holidays Detective Agency. Now everybody would know who they were! RETRIEVAL FOCUS 1. What did they find in the chest? 2.
