STAGE 4 Unit focus: Summer Holidays Detective Agency Text focus: Narrative The Case Of The cursed comic book Chapter 5 “You’re right!” Kimmy said, jumping to her feet. “It really does stink in here. It also smelled bad when we were walking around. That means it’s not something in the shed.” She stepped over to Mo and grabbed his shoes from his feet. “At least it’s not something that is only in the shed.” Kimmy waved Mo’s shoe over her head. The smell wafted around the shed, causing them all to wretch. “I hate it when people don’t pick up after their dog,” Mo said sadly. He took his shoe back from Kimmy and threw it out of the door. “I’ll hose it down in a bit.” “It must have been on the pavement on the way back from The Dragon’s Plunder,” Kimmy explained. “That’s why you slipped into the hedge. You trod on the dog mess, and your foot slipped. You’re not cursed at all.” The others looked nonplussed, although Mo definitely looked happier than somebody with a smelly shoe had a right to. “That still seems pretty far-fetched,” Ola said. “What about the rest of us. What about Edward’s plague?” “Not the plague,” Edward muttered. Kimmy scrunched up her face as she thought. Suddenly, she realised something and her eyes lit up. “You pushed through the bushes in the park to get here quicker, yes?” she asked urgently. “Yeah. So what?” “Those things are filled with brambles and thorns. There’s probably even poison ivy or something in there. Your skin was all red and blotchy because you pushed through a hedge. When you had a shower, it washed all the plant goop off your skin, and it calmed down.” Kimmy was usually one of the most intelligent in the group, but none of them had seen her as smug as she looked now. “What about your phone?” Ola asked. She seemed determined to hang on to the idea of the curse for as long as possible. all resources ©2024 Literacy Shed http://www.literacyshedplus.com “I put my phone on a shelf over a glass of water. I was kind of asking for trouble. Plus, we were all on edge and Edward didn’t exactly come into the shed quietly. It scared me, and I knocked it. It was my fault for putting it there. It’s annoying but hardly a curse. Besides, it still works now that it’s dry, so it’s hardly the same as getting the plague or falling into a bush.” “But we all sat on the bench!” Ola whined. “It’s ruined my new jeans!” “That’s because none of us bothered to check where we were sitting,” Mo said. “There were signs all over the park fence. I saw them when we left. That’s why nobody else was sitting on them. That one’s entirely our own fault.” “So there’s no curse?” Ola asked. She seemed to be finally coming round to the idea. The others shook their heads. “Well,” Ola said after a few seconds, “I’m glad that I could help the Summer Holidays Detective Agency solve yet another mystery!” SUMMARY FOCUS 1.
