Structural Functionalism DISS 2024 Simeon Miguel Abrera What do I contribute to society? What are institutions and how do they work? How can I find latent and manifest functions in society? What are other unspoken rules? Society is built on rules Norms rules that are enforced by members of a community and shared by members of a social group. There are formal and informal norms. Mores informal rules that when violated would result in severe punishments and social sanction upon the individuals. Folkways informal rules and norms that, while not offensive to violate, are Anomie is a social condition that occurs when a society’s previous common norms and values disappear, which causes people to feel a lack of belongingness. Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) ❏ “Man is a moral being, only because he lives in society. Structural functionalism is a sociological framework theory which views society as a structure with interrelated parts designed to meet the different needs of individuals in that society. These parts of society are groups of people: as simple as a mix of students in a classroom or a family living in the same house, to larger corporations and other social institutions. Social Functions Social functions are any institutions, behaviors, or customs that contribute to the maintenance and continuation of society. They can regulate behavior, uphold values, or provide a sense of identity to individuals.
