Theatre is a collaborative art form that combines words, voice, movement, and visual elements to express meaning. The term ‘theatre’ originates from the Greek word theatron, meaning a ‘place for looking’. During the Hispanic colonization, comedy or komedya and zarzuela or sarsuela rose as the Spaniards came to colonize and influence the country. It was not only intended to entertain Filipinos, but it also served as a teaching tool for Christianity. National Artist for Honorata “Atang” Dela Rama Theater is known to be the first star of the Philippine cinema. In 1979, she was hailed as the Queen of Kundiman and the Sarsuela at the age of 74. She was also at the forefront of introducing Filipino culture to foreign languages. He was the Dean of Instruction at Philippine Normal College and opened a theater with three one-act plays in 1953. Through his initiative, they were able to bring theater to near and far barrios in 47 provinces across the country. She is also known to be the forefront of professionalizing Filipino theater and likewise advocated for the formation of theater groups. Avellana Notable performances: Othello Macbeth in Black Casa de Bernada Alba The Portrait of the Artist as Filipino Staged Diego Silang in 1968 and Walang Sugat in 1871 Wrote the screenplays for Sakay (1939) and Portrait of the Filipino (1955) Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio She is a playwright, puppeteer, and educator. She is the founding artistic director of Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, a children's theater and puppet theater company established in 1977. Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio She was the Grand Dame of Southeast Asian Children's Theater. She was able to produce 10 books, 16 plays, 30 plays for children, and more than 130 short stories for children, which were mostly published by the Philippine Journal of Education.
