Released on September 12, 1919, it was a major box-office success, earning 90,000 pesos from a budget of 25,000 pesos Philippine arts. It became the most popular of all art forms. Its viewers come from all walks of life. Films have ranged from silent movies to talkies; black and white colored. As an art form, it reflects the culture and the beliefs of the people it caters to, and at most times, is the one who shapes their consciousness. concerned with acting out narratives or stories in front of an audience. Unlike cinema and television, theatre presents live actors on the stage in front of a live audience. Presently, films/movies are primarily made for profit, lacking any qualities to redeem itself. Genres that have been present for the past few decades are being recycled over and over again with the same stories. LITERARY ELEMENTS (DRAMA) 1.Plot- what happens in the play: 2.Character(s)- the personality(ies) or role(s) in the play enacted by the actors; 3.Theme- the main idea or view of life shared by the play; 4.Language/ dialog- manner of verbal expression; the speech, or writing style used in the play; and 5.Setting- time and place of the action of the play; and 6.Atmosphere- the dominant mood expressed in the play. PLAY/DRAMA 1.Scenery (set)- the equipment, such as curtains, plants, back drops, or platforms, used in a dramatic production to reflect the place and time or environment of the play events; 2.Costumes- clothing and accessories worn by actors to portray character and setting; 3.Props- short for properties; any movable object used on stage during performance, except costumes or scenery, example: a telephone, a car; 4.Lights- the position, color and intensity of lights to create a mood or environment; 5.Sound- the sounds an audience hears during the performance to help portray character, feeling, or environment; 6.Makeup- use of face and body cosmetics, wigs, costumes to portray a role or character to convey action or a personality; 2.Speaking- the manner of expression, projection of voice, or delivery of lines 3.Nonverbal expression- gestures, facial expression, and body alignment to convey meaning or portray a character. 4.Character blocking- the path or points formed by the actor’s movement on stage, usually determined by the director; and 5.Stage blocking- the actor’s movements on stage during performance; also refers to the play action as it goes from one event to another. There is direct interaction between the reader and dramatist. There is no direct interaction between audience and the dramatist. Interpretation of the play depends on the reader. Interpretation of the play depends on the artists. Drama is an abstract entity. Theater is a physical entity. SUMMARY ▪ Theatre refers to that branch of performing arts concerned with acting out narratives or stories in front of the audience. ▪ Theater art is an effective medium to promote social awareness. It is also used as means of entertainment and a liberal way to express one’s opinion. ▪ Drama is a type of theatre that focuses on dialog and action based on a written text (dramatic literature) or an improvised one. ▪ Drama has literary, technical, and performance elements. ▪ Scriptwriting is based on personal experience, prior knowledge, literature, and imagination, and helps to understand the play. ACTIVITY 1 Materials 1. A short play or story from a movie, or famous lines from “tiktok”. 2. Provide your own costumes including make-up accesories and props if needed.
