**LESSON 2\ \ Population:** who or what that you want to be able to draw conclusions about at the end of your study.\ **Sample:** group from which you actually collect data or the group of individuals who actually participate in your study.\ **Sampling:** the process or technique of choosing a sample from a population to participate in the study.\ **Generalizability:** The degree in which the research can be applied in broader context.\ It is important for the researchers to describe the population and the sample detailed so the application of generalizability can be determined.\ **Random sampling:** This is used in quantitative research. To ensure that everyone have an equal chance of participating.\ \ \ \ **Theoretical Saturation:** When no new information comes out of the sample.\ **Saturation:** Is the redundancy of the sample size\ **Sample size:** The size of the sample needs to be large enough to have an accurate representation of the population.\ **Rule of thumb** **Type of research** **Sample size** ------------------------------------------------- ----------------- Case study/Biography 1 Phenomenology 10 or less Grounded research, Action research, Ethnography 20-30 **Define Research Objectives:** Outline the goals of your study\ **Identify the target population:** Determine who and what you will study.\ **Inclusion criteria:** Define the criteria for who and what will you include in the research. (Age, Gender, Religion, et)\ **Exclusion criteria:** What characteristics will you disqualify.\ **Ethical considerations:** Make sure that the data will be confidential.\ **Flexibility:** be open to adjust the sample.\ \ **LESSON 3\ Sampling procedure is determined by:\ **-Research question\ -timeframe\ -Available resources\ \ -This disregards random selection of the subjects. Which means that not all will have an equal chance of participating.\ -This is not scientific.\ -This is commonly used in qualitative research.\ **Purposive sampling:** Participants are selected based on a pre-determined criteria.\ **Quota sampling:** Divides the sample into subgroups and then collecting the data.\ **Snowball sampling:** The researchers recruits participants by the use of recommendations.\ **Convenience Sampling:** Also called haphazard sampling, this allows the researchers to have the most convenient access to data.\ \ **LESSON 4\ Research Data:** Refers to all the data that the researchers collected. It may be intangible like age, gender, or it can be tangible or physical, like sample rocks and more.\ \ \ **Observational data:** Data collected through observation, using the five senses.\ **Experimental data:** Data collected through multiple intervention of the variables by the researchers.\ **Simulation data:** Imitating the operation of a real world process using a system.\ **Derived or compiled data**: Collecting data from various research to create a new set of data.\ \ **Data collection:** Is the most important part of the research. As it determines the credibility of your research.\ Plan before collecting data\ \ \ 1. Identify the questions that you want to answer. 2\. Determine the kind of data that is available. 3\. Determine how much data is needed. 4\. Determine how to measure the data. 5\. Decide who is going to collect the data. 6\. Determine where the data will be collected from. 7\. Decide whether to measure a sample or the whole population. 8\. Determine in what format the data will be displayed.
