W E L L B E I N G M AT T E R S PERSONALITY P E R L A Z G H E I B What is personality? Individual’s unique pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that persists over time and across situations. There are two important parts to this definition. On the one hand, personality refers to unique differences (those aspects that distinguish a person from everyone else). On the other hand, the definition asserts that personality is relatively stable and enduring —that these unique differences persist through time and across situations. Why do we have different personalities? To answer this question we should ask another WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT OUR PERSONALITIES? What is personality? Individual’s unique pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that persists over time and across situations. Biased perspectives we take on ourselves and the world around us. They are irrational thoughts and beliefs that we unknowingly reinforce over time. Cognitive Distortions These negative thought patterns can play a role in diminishing your motivation, lowering your self-esteem, and contributing to problems like anxiety, depression, and substance use. All cognitive distortions are: Tendencies or patterns of thinking or believing; That are false or inaccurate; And have the potential to cause psychological damage. Trait Theory! The Big Five What five basic traits describe most differences in personality? Contemporary trait theorists have boiled down personality traits to five basic dimensions: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and culture. There is a growing consensus today that these Big Five personality dimensions, also known as the five-factor model, capture the most salient dimensions of human personality (Costa & McCrae, 2006). Research has shown that the Big Five dimensions of personality may have some important real-world applications—particularly as they relate to employment decisions (Guohua & Jiliang, 2005). Trait Theory! Trait Theory! For example, one study found that the dimensions of extraversion and conscientiousness were reliable predictors of performance in sales. In another study, the measures of agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional stability predicted employee burnout (Zeng & Shi, 2007). The Big Five personality traits have also proved useful in describing and predicting behavior across a wide range of age groups and social settings. For instance, longitudinal and cross-sectional studies have demonstrated the validity and consistency of the Big Five personality traits across the life span. Other studies have shown the Big Five can reliably predict alcohol consump?tion, grade point average, and academic motivation among college students. Jot them down For this week our exercise is to jot down your thoughts and challenge them.
