ORAL COMMUNICATION TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT BERNADETTE A. CUTARAN OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify the various types of speech context; 2. use the types of speech context in order to communicate; and 3. exhibit appropriate verbal and nonverbal behavior in each speech context. SPEECH CONTEXT It refers to the circumstances, setting, or situation in which a speech or verbal communication occurs. TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT INTRAPERSONAL INTERPERSONAL - It is the process by which INTRAPERSONAL an individual communicates within themselves, acting as both sender and receiver of messages, and encompasses the use of unspoken words to consciously engage in self- talk and inner speech. - It forms your self-concept. Some examples of positive self-concepts include: o A person sees herself as an intelligent person; o A man perceives himself as an important member of his community; o A woman sees herself as an excellent spouse and friend; o A person thinks of himself as a nurturing and caring person; o A person views herself as a hard-working and competent employee. On the flip side, these people could have negative self-concepts like: o A person sees herself as stupid and slow; o A man perceives himself as a burden on his community; o A woman sees herself as a terrible spouse and friend; o A person thinks of himself as a cold and unapproachable person; o A person views herself as a lazy and incompetent employee. The Johari Window Model INTERPERSONAL Interpersonal communication is an exchange of information between two or more people. TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION Organizational Dyadic Small Public Mass Communication Group and Intercultural Communication DYADIC COMMUNICATION. This involves only two (2) participants forming the dyad. One speaker and listener come together to exchange information, ideas, thoughts or opinions. SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION. This type of speech context under interpersonal, requires 3 to 15 people discussing a problem or an issue and looking for a sensible solution and plan to address such problem or issue. PUBLIC COMMUNICATION. This type of communication, one speaker addresses many listeners, collectively known as an audience. MASS COMMUNICATION is termed as a medium of dispersing information to a large group of people with the aid of mass media technology. ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION. It refers to the interaction of members along with the links in an organizational structure. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION. It is the exchange of concepts, traditions, values, and practices between and among people of different nationalities and ways of life.
