Pelvic bones, joints ,ligaments , divisions and types. Course expectation Lecture expectation General objective At the end of this chapter the student should be able to discuss the normal anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive organs. Specific objectives At the end of this chapter the student should be able to: Describe the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system. Discuss the female pelvic bones ,joints and ligaments. Classification of the female genital organs. Female reproductive system is made up of : 1. Supportive structures. 2. Internal organs. 3. External organs. 1. Supportive Structure: Bony Pelvis The female pelvis (pelvic girdle) 10/7/2024 14 Each pelvis composed of 1. Two hip bones 2-One sacrum 3-One coccyx Hip bones (In nominate bones) Each one is composed of an ilium an ischium and a pubic bone Sacrum The sacrum is a solid bone formed from the five fused sacral vertebral with an intervening vertebral disc. Coccyx The coccyx is the set of fused ,tapered rounded bones,4-5 in number ,that articulate with the sacrum Functions of the pelvis 1. Supports the weight of the body from the vertebral column. 2. Protects and supports the lower organs, including the urinary bladder, the reproductive organs and the developing fetus in a pregnant woman Pelvic joints There are four pelvic joints: ❑One symphysis pubis: Between the two pubic bones at the front of the pelvis. ❑ Two sacro-iliac joints: The sacro-iliac joints between the sacrum and the ilium. ❑ One sacrococcygeal joint: between the sacrum and the coccyx. Pelvic Joints Pelvic-ligaments 1. Interpubic ligaments. 2. Sacroiliac ligaments. 3. Sacrococcygeal ligament. 4. Sacrotuberous ligament. 5. Sacrospinous ligament. 1. Interpubic ligaments At the symphysis pubis Sacroiliac ligaments Are situated in a deep depression between the sacrum and the ilium behind. Sacrococcygeal ligaments Descend from the surface of the sacrum to the coccyx Sacrotuberous ligament That connects the ischial tuberosity to the lateral surface of the sacrum and coccyx Sacrospinous ligament That connects the ischial spine to the lateral surface of sacrum and coccyx Iliolumbar Ligaments Connect between sacral lumbar vertebra 4 and 5 and the illiac bone. Types of Pelvis 1-Gynecoid or normal female pelvis is round and adapted for the function of childbirth. 2. Android pelvis or male type pelvis which has a heart-shaped outlet 3. Anthropoid pelvis: oval shaped outlet. 4. Platypelloid pelvis has a wide transverse outlet, kidney shaped. 10/7/2024 30 Classification of the pelvis 1. The lesser pelvis (or "true pelvis") is the space below the pelvic brim between the pelvic inlet and the pelvic floor. 2. The greater pelvis (or "false pelvis") is the space above the pelvic brim. It is bounded on either side by the ilium. Division of the Female Pelvis 1) Inlet "upper pelvic opening“ 2) Pelvic cavity 3) Pelvic outlet 10/7/2024 35 Measurements of the pelvic canal in centimeters
