MAIN LESSON** #### **1) Activity 2: Content Notes** ##### **Using E-commerce Tools in Tourism and Hospitality** The fifth world tourism and hospitality issue is the use of e-commerce tools in tourism and hospitality. More than 50% of the travelers in the United States use the internet in planning their travel and vacations. This occurrence is growing globally. If a destination does not have a good website, it will miss tourism and hospitality traffic. A positive effect in developing destination websites is that developers can find good websites that are similar to their destinations and copy the best features. As internet access continues to increase in many countries, online travel revenues will also increase. The number of internet users around the world was estimated to be 4.39 billion in 2019 according to datareportal.com. E-commerce sites have been steadily rising through the ranks over the course of the past year, and Alexa's latest data puts 5 e-commerce sites in the top 20 ranking. It is evident that the use of e-commerce tools for tourism and hospitality will continue to grow in the future. Several e-commerce tools equip tourism and hospitality for a high-tech future. Since tourism and hospitality is a combination of products and services, the multimedia qualities of electronic commerce can be applied effectively to tourism and hospitality in order to increase the effectiveness of a destination. And since a large part of tourism and hospitality is marketing, tourism and hospitality promoters who are technically knowledgeable about interactive marketing will have competitive advantage over less-skilled competitors. The emerging e-commerce tools are web blogs, podcasts, internet marketing and mobile applications. With roughly 5.5 billion smartphones in use across the world today, it's little surprise that the mobile app market is booming. The latest data from App Annie show that app downloads increased by 9 percent over the past 12 months, reaching close to 200 billion total downloads for full-year 2018. Also, people are spending considerably more on apps too. App Annie reports that the world's smartphone users spent more than US$100 billion on apps in 2018 alone. Comparing this against the number of smartphones in use around the world that Ericsson reports for 2018, this would mean that the average smartphone user now spends more than US$20 on apps each year, and this figure is even higher in more developed economies (datareportal.com). Digital Market Outlook studies show that e-commerce spend has grown by 14 percent year-on-year, with the company estimating that full-year 2018 spend on consumer goods alone topped US$1.78 trillion. At 17 percent, Fashion & Beauty posted the strongest growth over the past year, with annual global spend in the category now topping half a trillion US dollars. However, online travel and accommodation bookings accounted for the largest share of consumer e-commerce spending in 2018, with users around the world spending a combined US$750 billion on online travel over the course of the full year. ##### **Tourism and Hospitality Education and Training** The sixth major tourism and hospitality issue is tourism and hospitality education and training. Globalization and innovation will be the outstanding feature of tourism and hospitality education and training in the future. Several innovations are taking place in some universities. The University of the Balearic Islands in Majorca, Spain has a Master and PhD in Tourism and Environmental Economics that is really unique with students coming from several countries. It is a well-designed program which offers several-courses. More than 50 visiting professors from different countries teach in the programs. There are also a lot of new trends in tourism and hospitality education and training. This includes the collaboration between tourism agencies and educators of tourism colleges and universities to address the changing needs of the tourism and hospitality industry. One example is the collaboration between the Business Enterprises for Sustainable Travel (BEST) with the Education Network (EN). The group holds annual international tourism and hospitality research conferences in various locations worldwide. In these conferences, sustainable tourism topics are discussed; and curriculum modules are developed to be used in tourism courses and programs around the world. These conferences enable the promotion and sharing of the latest best thinking and best practices in tourism and hospitality education in order to produce effective and efficient tourism and hospitality managers in the future. Other important trends are closely related to globalization and political stability. Bremmer (2206) states that "Openness enables change. Change is an essential ingredient in growth and prosperity. Only the free exchange of information, values, ideas and people can build a sustainable global stability that enriches all who take part in it." This can only happen with the continuous barriers to flow of international tourism and hospitality education and training. In 2019, there were 330 million jobs created by through the provision of travel and tours products and services (WTTC, 2019). This translates to 1 in 10 jobs around the world is in the tourism and hospitality industry. This is why a highly educated workforce is needed for the continued growth and success of global tourism and hospitality industry. This document is the property of PHINMA EDUCATION.
