Rebucas, LPT SHS, World Religions Teacher Origin of Hinduism Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world Also referred to as Sanatana Dharma, “the eternal tradition”, or the eternal way”. Hindu- “Shindu” (Local name of Indus River) Aryans- name originally given to people who said to speak Indo-Eurpean language and were thought to have settled prehistoric times in Iran and Indian subcontinent. It was established around 3,000 BCE with no single historical founder and no central revelation, no creed or unified system of belief, no single doctrine of slavation, and no centralized authority. BRAHMAN Supreme being Highest Universal Principle Infinite & Eternal “TRIMURTI” Vishnu Brahma Shiva (Preserver) (Creator) (Destroyer) GANESHA The son of Shiva and Paryati. He is a pot- bellied elephant God and the Lord of success, knowledge and wealth KRISHNA A blue skinned deity of love and compassion also she is one of the most beloved of Hindu Gods. RAMA Known as the God of Truth and Virtue, also another avatar of Vishnu. HANUMAN A monkey-faced deity is worshipped as a symbol of physical strength, preserverance, service, and scholarly devotion. LAKSHMI The Goddess of wealth and prosperity, both material and spiritual. AVATAR In Hinduism, the incarnation of a deity in human or animal form to counteract an evil in the world. SACRED TEXT “SHRUTI” (Heard) The Shruti literature is in two parts: the Vedas and the Upanishads SACRED TEXT “VEDAS” (Knowledge) The Rig Veda - “Royal Knowledge” The Sama Veda - “Knowledge of Chants” The Yajur Veda - “Knowledge of Sacrificial Rituals” The Arthava Veda - “Knowledge of Incarnations” SACRED TEXT “UPHANISHADS” 108 Philosophical Ideas KENA, KATHA, PRASHNA, MUNDAKA, MANDUKYA, TAIRIRIYA, AITAREYA, CHANDOGYA, BRIHADARANYAKA SACRED TEXT “SMRITI” (Memorized) “Ramayana” The most popular of the Hindu epics, depicts the story of a royal couple of Ayodhya - Rama and Sita and other characters and their exploits. SACRED TEXT “SMRITI” (Memorized) “Bhagavad Gita” The most well-known of the Hindu scriptures, called the “Song of the Adorable One”, which contains the most brillant theological lessons about the nature of God. DHARMA refers righteous way of living and the idea of every human’s duties and responsibilities. ATMAN or “A Permanent Self (Soul)” means that every living creature have souls. KARMA means that if someone did something bad to you, it will bring back to them by the way they did it. It involved the Hindu doctrine of reincarnation. AHIMSA is a practice of non-violence to all beings. Hurting one another means hurting ultimately to every creature that has life. SAMSARA is the cycle of birth-death and rebirth. NIRVANA as is the attainment of highest state at Hindu can reach. This freeing is called Moksha. BRAHMANISM SHAKTISM Earliest Indian religious Shakti is the divine power that create and sustain the world and tradition that emerged those who practice Shaktism focuses from the ancient Vedic on the goddess Devi who embodies religion. Shakti SECTS SHAIVISM VAISHNAVISM Shiva is the Largest devotional sect Supreme God that focuses on the worship of Vishnu. ISSUES CASTE SYSTEM Ancient classification of people in terms of occupation SATI CHILD A social practice of self- immolation which is MARRIAGE now rare and prohibited in India THANK YOU GOD BLESS :)
