Chris Luna, uap Introduction The fertile plains between the twin rivers, Tigris & Euphrates were given the name Mesopotamia from the Greek word meaning mesos (middle) & potamos (river). Known as the “cradle of civilization”, is also part of what is known as the Fertile Crescent because of the irrigated farmlands. Mesopotamia, now known as Iraq, has no natural barriers. Mesopotamia (included Babylonia, Assyria, Persia, Sumer and Akkad) was a historical region situated within the Tigris–Euphrates River system. It is situated 60 km northeast of the city of Shiraz in Fars Province, Iran. The earliest remains of Persepolis date back to 515 BC.
