Cruz, RPh, MSc PHARMACY PROGRAM All higher education institutions (HEIs) to offer Pharmacy program must: Secure permit from CHED Comply with the PSG for Pharmacy Program (CMO 25 s. 2021) The new set of PSG (CMO 25 s. 2021) for Pharmacy program was promulgated in accordance with: Higher Education Act of 1994 (RA 7722) The Philippine Pharmacy Act (RA 10918) Training Regulations for NC III Pharmacy Services (RA 7796) PHARMACY PROGRAM The Philippine Pharmacy Act (RA 10918) provides and shall govern the: Standardization and regulation of Pharmacy education. Administration of licensure examination, registration, and licensing of pharmacists. Supervision, control, and regulation of the practice of pharmacy in the Philippines. Development and enhancement of professional competencies of pharmacist through continuing professional development, research and other related activities. Integration of the Pharmacy profession. PHARMACY PROGRAM CHED together with the Technical Committee on Pharmacy Education (TCPE) is in-charge of setting standards, monitoring, and evaluating the pharmacy education in the country. General Program Outcomes: Practice pharmacy professionally and ethically Provide pharmaceutical care Conduct relevant research, disseminate findings, and translate it in the practice Apply managerial and entrepreneurial skills Facilitate learning effectively the knowledge, skills, aptitude, and competencies for pharmacists. SCHOLARSHIPS Professional organizations of pharmacy offer scholarships to students at schools of pharmacy subject to the availability of funds: Philippine Pharmacists Association Scholarships (PPhA) Granted to 4th year students (recommended by the Dean) School must be a member of Philippine Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Philippine Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (PACOP) Granted to 4th year students; must have an academic average of at least 2.00 Granted to two (2) students; to receive Php 30,0000.00 Colegio Medico Farmaceutico de Filipinas, Inc. Scholarship and Study Grant Granted to annually to graduating pharmacy students whose parents are either a pharmacist or a doctor provided that the student meets the requirements. CURRICULUM Based on the CMO, the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy is offered as a 4-year program including general education and professional courses with 1,200 hours of internship or supervised pharmacy practice experience. The curriculum has a total of 169 credit units (minimum) composed of 24 units – Core courses 9 units – Electives 3 units – Life and Works of Rizal 14 units – PE (8 units) and NSTP (6 units) 119 units – Professional courses (including internship) CURRICULUM For the internship or supervised practice of pharmacy experience, every student of pharmacy must be able to rotate and complete the prescribed hours per area of practice: Areas: Institutional Pharmacy (120 hours) Public Health and Regulatory Pharmacy (180 hours) Community Pharmacy (300 hours) Hospital Pharmacy (300 hours) Manufacturing Pharmacy (300 hours) MAPUA PHARMACY CURRICULUM The Pharmacy Program for MAPUA University School of Health Sciences includes the following: 126 units – Professional, Core, and Internship courses 24 units – GE courses 3 units – Rizal course 8 units – PE 6 units – NSTP 14 units – MAPUA GE courses 6 units – Professional electives 3 units – Correlation courses TOTAL: 190 units LICENSURE EXAMINATION After rigid scholastic training, students of the B.S Pharmacy program is eligible to take the licensure examination upon meeting the qualifications: 1. A Filipino citizen or of a foreign country that has a law or policy on reciprocity for the practice of the pharmacy profession. 2. Of good moral character and reputation. 3. A degree holder of B.S. Pharmacy or its equivalent degree conferred by a HEI in the Philippines or an institution of learning from a foreign country duly recognized by CHED. 4. Has completed internship program approved by the Board. LICENSURE EXAMINATION The licensure exam is administered twice a year: April and November. Must obtain a weighted average of 75% with no rating lower than 50% in any of the modules. Modules: Module 1: Pharmaceutical Chemistry 20% Module 2: Pharmacognosy 15% Module 3: Practice of Pharmacy 17.5% Module 4: Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics 15% Module 5: Pharmaceutics 17.5% Module 6: Quality Assurance / Quality Control 15% TOTAL 100% LICENSURE EXAMINATION Module 1: Pharmaceutical Chemistry 20% Inorganic Pharmaceutical Chemistry Organic Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry Qualitative Pharmaceutical Chemistry Module 2: Pharmacognosy 15% Plant Chemistry and Pharmacognosy Biochemistry LICENSURE EXAMINATION Module 3: Practice of Pharmacy 17.5% Compounding-Dispensing Pharmacy Hospital Pharmacy Clinical Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Calculations Module 4: Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics 15% Pharmacology Biopharmaceutics Toxicology Incompatibilities and Adverse Drug Reactions LICENSURE EXAMINATION Module 5: Pharmaceutics 17.5% Manufacturing Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms and Drug Delivery Systems Physical Pharmacy Jurisprudence and Ethics Module 6: Quality Assurance / Quality Control 15% Drug Testing with Instrumentation Microbiology Public Health LICENSURE EXAMINATION After passing the licensure examination, successful graduates are given a professional identification card a board certification breakdown of results of the exam per module and overall rating Unsuccessful takers are given a maximum of 3 attempts, however failure to pass the licensure examination after the 3rd attempt will require the student to enroll themselves in a refresher program before being allowed to take again. PHARMACY SERVICES NC III Following the enactment of the “Technical Skills and Development Act of 1994 (TESDA)”, the Pharmacy Service NC III was created following the amended guidelines for training regulations on June 25, 2015. The Pharmacy Services NC III became a short-course offered by TESDA which started in 2016. It aims to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude needed for the role of Pharmacy Assistants. It includes the basic, common, and core competencies of the profession. GROWTH AND DEVELOPEMT OF THE PHARMACY EDUCATION Pharmacy Program started in UST. The first school to offer Pharmacy program in the Philippines was UST by virtue of the Moret Decree, on May 29, 1871, led by Don Inocencio Madrigal y Garrido as the first Dean. During the Spanish regime, it was 6-year program, but graduates of UST were allowed to practice right after graduation. During the American occupation, the program was reduced to 4 years and pharmacy graduates are required to pass an examination issued by the Board of Examiners or Junta Examinadora before they can practice. In 1924, with the permission from the Holy See, women (3) were first admitted to the Pharmacy program in UST. GROWTH AND DEVELOPEMT OF THE PHARMACY EDUCATION Pharmacy Program started in UST. UST with the leadership of Fr. Lorenzo Rodriguez (FLR) opened the first botanical garden on October 10, 1932, but it was destroyed during WW II. The second botanical garden was inaugurated on December 7, 1948. In memory of FLR, who was the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy from 1946 – 1968, his bust is placed at the Pharmacy Botanical Garden after his death in 1976. In 2006, UST offered a 5-year B.S. Pharmacy Major in Clinical Pharmacy degree. In 2016, UST offered a 1-year ClinPhar second degree program exclusive for registered Thomasian Pharmacists. In 2017, UST offered a 2-year post-baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) to registered pharmacists that focuses on out-patient care in all practice areas. Pursue post graduate studies (Master’s and Doctorate degrees) Pursuant to Resolution no. 279 s. 2017, the PRC of Pharmacy effective January 2019, all pharmacist who will renew their professional license should have earned 45 CPD units offered by an accredited CPD provider.
