Birth / Death / Population Growth Rate What is Birth rate? The number of live births per 1,000 people in a population per year. Example of UK in 2023 Birth rate = (763,191 / 67,736,802) x 1000 = 11.267 The birth rate is 11.267 births per 1000 people = 11 (Rounded off t...
Birth / Death / Population Growth Rate What is Birth rate? The number of live births per 1,000 people in a population per year. Example of UK in 2023 Birth rate = (763,191 / 67,736,802) x 1000 = 11.267 The birth rate is 11.267 births per 1000 people = 11 (Rounded off to whole number) What is Death rate(mortality rate)? The number of deaths per 1,000 people in a population per year. Example of UK in 2023 Death rate = (690,915 / 67,736,802) x 1000 = 10.200 The death rate is 10.200 births per 1000 people = 10 (Rounded off to whole number) Natural Increase / decrease Natural increase This occurs when the birth rate exceeds the death rate during a given time period. The result is a net increase in the population size, excluding migration effects. Natural decrease This occurs when the death rate exceeds the birth rate during a given time period. The result is a net decrease in the population size, also excluding migration effects. Natural Increase / decrease Example: If the birth rate is 11 per 1,000 people and the death rate is 10 per 1,000 people, the natural increase would be 11 − 10 = 1 per 1,000 people in 2023. Conversely, if the birth rate is 10 per 1,000 people and the death rate is 11 per 1,000 people, the natural decrease would be 10−11=-1 per 1,000 people in 2023. What is Population Growth Rate? Measurement of how fast a population is growing or declining in a given area during a certain period of time, usually expressed as a percentage of the population. The calculation considers all factors that increase (births and immigration) and decrease (deaths and emigration) the population. Emigration vs Immigration Emigration is about leaving, and immigration is about arriving. What is Population Growth Rate? Population Growth rate calculation: (Population 2023 - population 2022 / population 2022) x100% UK: (67,736,802 - 67,508,936 / 67,508,936) x 100% = 0.34% Example of Population Growth Rate
